One of
the questions we get at J!-ENT is how to read Japanese characters
on the web. There are a few ways to do this and here are
the two most popular ways:
1) Buy kanji recognition
software
2) Download software
It's true
that kanji software can be very expensive. I use two types
of software. For a word processor, I have used KanjiWORD
3.0 and Kanjikit
to read Japanese characters online or documents both by Pacific
Software Publishing Inc. They have a really cool website
called:

Now, some
of this software are over a hundred bucks. I understand
many of you are weary of spending that much, so therefore a
cheaper alternative is to download kanji recognition software
such as:
* If you use, MS Internet
Explorer, downloading their Japanese software is very cool!
If you have MS Windows, click on that START button on your bottom
left corner and click on WINDOWS UPDATE. It will take
you to the downloads section and you can download the Japanese
fonts and a program that will let you type in Japanese characters.
* Another popular alternative,
especially if you are a Netscape user is to use NJSTAR's
Japanese Word Processor. You can download the latest version
of this software by clicking here.
* NeocorTech has a cool program
called J-TEXT
which you can download here.
* For Word Processing, there was
an older program that was called JWP
that is pretty cool!
RELATED QUESTIONS:
* I downloaded the Internet
Explorer program. Now how do I read Japanese text?
Assuming you are using Internet
Explorer 5 and higher, you can click on view ->encoding or
right click on the Japanese website and click on encoding.
Select Japanese (Auto-Text) and that should solve the problem.
* Are there programs online that
will translate the Japanese characters to English text?
Yes there is. Try the following:
