This includes all anime features, official or fan-generated scripts for these features and illustrations featuring the likenesses of the characters appearing in these features (as in GIF files). Copyrights are intended to make sure that the author of the work receives appropriate compensation for his/her job. Some people consider the copying of anime a morally corrupt practice, as the author of the work is not being paid. There have been several counter-arguments to this by anime fans, such as: - It is unlikely that the Japanese companies will sue the fan, as this practice creates a demand for other anime-related products, which increases their sales. - The fan is against profiting from this activity, and in some cases even boycotts and denounces any people who are doing it for profit. - These features are far too expensive/hard-to-find for the fan to acquire them by other means. Regardless of any moral or economical justifications, the fact is that copying of anime features is illegal under US law. If the fan resorts to this method to obtain anime material, he/she should be aware of this. o TRANSLATED ANIME - Palladium Books Palladium Books 5926 Lonyo Detroit, MI 48210 This company sells English episodes of: - THE ROBOTECH MASTERS - ROBOTECH: THE NEW GENERATION - ROBOTECH: THE SENTINELS [Note 1: The rights for the Robotech series revert to Streamline in January 1993] [Note 2: There is currently no release of the entire first season available on video] - Kidmark KIDMARK, INC. Also, her scripts may not be as good as professional translations, but she always packs some freebie stuff with your order to compensate for it. :-) [I have a copy of Sue's catalog in electronic format. E-mail me for a copy.] o ANIME FTP SITES These Internet sites contain anime related materials and are accessible by anonymous FTP. There may be other sites, but these are the major ones. Martin romulus.rutgers.edu 128.6.13.2 --- Mirror of remus.rutgers.edu wpi.wpi.edu 130.215.24.1 /anime scripts, GIFs A crude guide to using FTP: Unix Command: ftp Login: anonymous Password: login@machine_name Let's say that geeker@pac.man.edu wants to get the latest and greatest Ranma-chan GIF (/anime/hentai/r-chan1.gif) from happosai.com. - At the Unix prompt, geeker types "ftp happosai.com". - At the "login:" prompt, he types "anonymous". - At the "Password:" prompt, he types "geeker@pac.man.edu". He's now logged at happosai.com. - geeker now uses cd(1) and ls(1) just like in Unix to find whatever he's after. If geeker want to get the Ranma-chan GIF, he must do the following: - He uses cd(1) to go to /anime/hentai. Once there, he uses ls(1) to make sure that r-chan1.gif is actually there. - GIF files are binary, so geeker sets the file transfer type to binary by typing "binary". - geeker types "get ", where is the name of the file he wants to copy. In our case, he would type "get r-chan1.gif" to get the file. Note that no wildcards are allowed. - Several other ftp commands to know: "?" - lists the commands available "quit" - exits the program "ascii" - sets file transfer mode to ascii "mget" - allows multiple-file gets, and wildcards If you need help, or want to learn advanced techniques, DON'T post to rec.arts.anime for help. Instead, ask your local system administrator / CCON / Unix witch doctor for help. That's what they're paid for. Notes: - Synopses are available at most of the sites mentioned above. - Sound files: These are IFF "raw" sound files, which can be played on Amiga, MS-DOS, Macintosh and Sun computers. There is also a text file with instructions on how to play them. - EAV (Electronic Animation Velocity) and AnimeStuff are electronic anime fanzines. EAV is put out by Randall Stukey and the Anime Publications Bureau, and AnimeStuff is published by a group of anime fans in CompuServe. - urusei-yatsura archives: the collected messages of four years (1987-1991) of the Urusei Yatsura mailing list (see below). Warning: this file is HUGE! (about 300 pages long). - Remember to set your file type to BINARY before reading any GIF files, sound files, or compressed text (.Z) files. o ANIME BITNET FILESERVERS listserv@brownvm.brown.edu -- Miyazaki mailing list archive. From the Internet, send a message with the text 'get nausicaa filelist' to the above address. BITFTP@PUCC -- FTP access for BITNET sites. The loose-leaf format allows the synopses/scripts to be kept in alphabetical order (or any other desired order), and there is a liberal amount of artwork to complement the (now) laser printed pages. I'm writing this to let you folks know about the Anime Encyclopedia in case you are interested. Cost and mailing info: Main book (100 pages) $8.00 Supplements 1 - 4 (50 pages each) $4.50 each Prices cover repro and mailing costs To get copies or for info write: Lynn Johnson 1955 Fountain View #24 Houston TX 77057 Lynn's project is great in that it allows fans to get much needed info to make their enjoyment of anime much better while not taking advantage of them. I'd like to support her efforts by sending her scripts and synopses from the Net. Any problem with this? All submissions to the Anime Encyclopedia are credited with the author's name when known. If anyone would like to contribute written material or Artwork NOT on disk, please send the material directly to her. If it is in electronic form, please send it to me so I can consolidate entries, format them in a form Lynn can use (keep her from typing her fingers to the bone...) and mail the resulting disk to her (she has no Net access). This will also speed the production of additional supplements! Much thanks from both of us for any assistance. ***************************************************** *"The ten year old |\/\/\/\/| * RICH * * Who's brave and bold!" | | * ANDERSON * * | | ************** *"When he's not in class, |\ / | Dirty Pair * * He's risking his ass," (.)
