        This is mainly addressed to those who insist that Disney's "The Lion
King" is just a rip-off of Kimba the White Lion, though everyone's invited to
read this little treatise and join in on the fun. Since many people have
mentioned the strong Blade Runner influence on Bubblegum Crisis, I thought I'd
take this a bit further. So without any further preamble, I present J L
Morreale's "Separated at Birth?" Guide to Anime.

Bubblegum Crisis:
        In a depressing world of the future, violent cyborgs can only be
stopped by those with the right equipment.
=> Blade Runner
        Maybe Boomers dream of electric sheep?

Urusei Yatsura:
        Love triangle between a tempermental society girl, an energetic but
innocently naive girl, and the lecherous boy they both love, while a wacky and
assorted cast gets caught in the middle of it all.
=> Archie
        Too bad Betty can't shoot lightning bolts and fly.

Tenchi Muyo:
        Young man is caught up in an intergalactic battle with an evil tyrant,
and gorgeous women keep falling for him in the process.
=> Flash Gordon
        I wonder if Ming ever played the Pipe Organ?

Space Cruiser Yamato:
        A disaster on Earth sends a brave crew on a long journey to determine
it's fate.
=> Space 1999
        ...even though Earth didn't fare so well in the other show...

Gall Force:
        A race of robotice beings tries to exterminate the last of a small
fleet that is desperately seeking some means of survival.
=> Battlestar Galactica
        Don't Lufy and Starbuck make the cutest couple?

SDF Macross:
        A mighty warship is all that stands between a vast fleet and their
quest to destroy the Earth.
=> Battlestar Galactica
        ...right up to the last season taking place on Earth!

SDC Orguss:
        A man misplaced in time becomes the key to a war between passive
defenders and the evil agressors.
=> Buck Rodgers
        Featuring Mel Blanc as the voice of the little android girl!

Ah! Megamisama:
        A woman with magical powers jumps into the life of a luckless young
man, and craziness can only follow.
=> I Dream of Jeannie
        Belldandy even kinda looks like Barbara Eden, ya know...

Explorer Woman Ray:
=> Indiana Jones
Dog Soldiar:
=> Rambo
        Those were just too easy. Moving right along...

Galaxy Express 999:
        A young man travels along a seemingly endless "highway" and meets a
plethora of interesting people and situations.
=> Route 66

Astroboy:
        The adventures of a young boy who was created by a loving old man.
=> Pinnochio

Kimba, the White Lion:
        A young animal Prince grows in good times, tragic times and finally
takes his rightful place as king.
=> Bambi
        I'm not sure, but I think the creater even admitted to Bambi inspiring
his work on Kimba.

Speed Racer:
        The mystery-solving adventures of a young man and his super powered
vehicle.
=> Supercar
        "Supercarrrrrr, Supercarrrrr!" "Go, Speed Racer, Go, Speed Racer..."

Dirty Pair:
        A pair of trouble consultants constantly create more havok than they
were sent in to fix, and it's never really their fault.
=> Car 54, Where Are You?

Riding Bean:
        A slick guy in a fast car ends up being constantly harrassed by an
over-obsessive police chief.
=> Smokey & the Bandit/ The Dukes of Hazzard

Kiki's Delivery Service:
        A young girl grows up in a new town and ends up charming everyone she
meets.
=> Pollyanna

Battle Angel:
        Cybernettics turn a young girl into an ultra-powerful war machine,
evil-doer's beware.
=> The Bionic Woman

Mobile Suit Gundam 0083:
        A young man is found to be the perfect pilot to battle against an enemy
that is almost legendary in his ability, and finds that the woman he loves is
linked to him through a past relationship.
=> Star Wars

Ranma 1/2:
        Gender confusion, mistaken identities, the battle of the sexes, battles
of honor, and all around lunacy plague a peaceful town.
=> Pick a Shakespearean play, *any* Shakespearean play. :)

Akira:
        The Government tries to keep surfacing psychic powers under control and
pays for it in the end.
=> Firestarter

Gunbuster:
        Children train to be soldiars and become the last hope for the planet
earth as they fight buglike aliens.
=> Ender's Game

Kimagure Orange Road:
        Love triangles, good wholesome family fun, highschool hijinks and a
break at the local cafe.
=> Happy Days
        Madoka should practice saying "Ayyyyyyyyy!!!!"

Sailor Moon:
        Crazy battles, transformation sequences, and a skinny, bubble-headed
girl take center stage in this action-comedy with a romance theme.
=> Popeye
        Look, it's even got sailor suits!

Buffy the Vampire Slayer:
        Ditzy girl discovers she's the next in a long line of women destined to
do battle with the forces of evil.
=> Devil Hunter Yohko
        Whoops! Well, just goes to show that it works both ways, doesn't it?

        Hope everyone who read this enjoyed it as much as I did, and I really
am still doing fanfics, honest! :)
