=========================================================================== BBS: NEO-TOKYO 2099 II Date: 02-15-95 (00:16) Number: 4465 From: MARK WEISS Refer#: NONE To: ALL Recvd: NO Subj: The Rules, Short Vers. Conf: (14) Anime --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Internation FIDONet Anime Conference Rules (Really Short Version) ***Official*** Updated October 8, 1994 rev 1.0 1. This is a conference about Japanese animation. Participants are encouraged to discuss all aspects of animation from Japan in a friendly manner that is conducive to a congenial atmosphere. No personal attacks, shouting, or incendiary retorts will be tolorated. Try to handle volatile topic matter in a diplomatic manner. 2. No handles will be permitted here. (If your BBS log-on is a handle and you cannot get your real name to print in the message header "FROM:" field, I ask that you sign your real FULL name at the bottom of each message to identify yourself. 3. No "high ASCII" (ASCII characters greater than 127) are allowed in messages. This conference passes through many non-IBM systems and such data may cause problems on some routing systems along the way. 4. No illegal activities, including sales of pirated videos, CDs (or tapes from CDs), or any other copyrighted materials will be tolorated here. Be aware that there is a difference between "trading" and "illegal sale for profit". Make sure that if you're trading with someone, that it's for cost of postage only and the cost of the tape. Officially, we cannot condone all trading, since an increasing amount of this material is becoming widely available in the US. See the next rule for details on trading issues. 5. Trading is not specifically banned from this echo, however, any instances of abuse of the privilege will cause me to reconsider the allowance or disallowance of trading. You are permitted to make requests publicly now, with followup taken to Netmail. THERE IS TO BE NO SALE FOR THE SAKE OF PROFITEERING ON THIS ECHO. Regarding the specific titles you are allowed to openly solicit, there is one simple rule: if the title is commercially-available in the USA, then it's illegal to trade and the use of this conference to trade such tapes is considered a serious offense, punishable by the actions called-out in rule #4 of this publication. The golden rule is "When in doubt, DON'T." 6. With regard to UUEncoded messages, I will continue to permit them, however, keep it reasonable. Keep GIFs at or below 50 kilobytes so that the number of messages required to commute these files does not exceed 10 messages. All UUEs will be monitored by the Moderator. There is to be no sexually-explicit material distributed in the form of encoded pictures (UUEs) on this conference. This is a family echo. Let's keep it clean. 7. Test messages are not allowed here. I won't slap your wrist if you post one in error, however I might take a dim view of it. Use your local echos to do tests. 8. Overquoting messages is discouraged here. If you are using an editor on-line and you are not aware of how to use the quote feature efficiently, ask your SysOp for instruction on its proper use. Please make the effort to quote only enough of the message as needed to maintain the context of the thread. 9. Topicality is encouraged here. Please try to remain on-topic. I do not mind if the subject strays a little off topic now and then, but please don't carry on complete and lengthy conversations on non-anime matters. Use Netmail if you want to discuss other topics at length. If you must segue to another topic in the middle of your messages, at least try to tie it into anime. 10. Let the Moderator do the moderating. If you observe someone breaking the rules, please do not admonish that person by using the echo to do so. If someone is persistantly creating behavior that you personally find annoying, you may send me netmail at 1:141/730 and advise me as to the situation. 11. The use of foul language is strongly discouraged here. We are read by users of all ages. This is not by any means an "Over 18" conference. In addition, good ediquette is good policy. It is much more intellectually challenging to describe a lousey film using clean, high-level words, rather than to take the lazy route and use four-letter expletives. 12. Subject lines should reflect the current message content. This is more a preferencial matter than a rule, but consider the fact that some users like to use a search feature to locate topics of interest. =========================================================== These are the rules, effective as of July 8, 1994, abridged for this short version October 8, 1994. I am open to your suggestions, as this echo belongs to everbody and some degree of agreement and fairness is in order. I believe these rules to be fair and reasonable, and I expect that the majority of sane individuals will abide by them as they are already doing so out of common sense. In closing, treat others nicely, even if they are not so nice at first. Often you can turn a bad situation around if you reflect a pleasant attitude toward a marginal post. Let conscience be your guide, and if you get a flame from someone else, don't get angry, but instead change the subject, or if you must retort, do it in a manner that makes them realize how inappropriately they acted. A graceful handling of unsavory matters will win you more favor than a flame war. And lastly, the periodic posting of these rules is merely a required duty and should not be taken as an indication that the Moderator is dissatisfied with the conduct in general. Sincerely, Mark A.
