Anime-related Video Games [Last modified 2/13/94] This article lists the anime (and manga) related video games that are avail- able. Most are available only in Japan. Games upon which anime was based (ex. Dragon Quest/Dragon Warrior) are listed separately. The list is bound to be incomplete, if only because I don't know every single anime that exists and thus can't tell with certainty that a game is anime-based. If you think a game may be out of print, let me know. While it still may be possible to buy it at some stores, it will save some frustration when trying to special order it. Thanks to all those that contributed to the list either knowingly or unknowingly. :-) Your help is greatly appreciated! DISCLAIMER: Because I (or Steve Pearl, who used to keep this list) collected many of these listings and did not write them, I cannot vouch for their complete accuracy. Use this as a guide only. Thanks! --- *The Systems* Since anime is so popular in Japan, there are many anime-related video games available there. Unfortunately, the systems that are sold in America often differ from their Japanese counterparts leading to many headaches and much hair-rending when trying to get games made for one system to them to run on the "equivalent" system. Japanese/American System Equivalent and Compatibility Chart Japanese American Compatibility Notes -------- -------- ------------------- Gameboy Gameboy Yes. Famicom NES No, but adapters are available (from Hong Kong, etc.) that work most of the time. Famicom N/A The Disk system is not available in the US. Disk System Super Famicom Super NES Yes for American systems, but the cartridge cases may need to be filed or the slot adapted to fit the cartridge. Europeans will need adapters. NEC PC-Engine TG16/Duo CD/SCD games are compatible, regular (CoreGrafx) cartridges need adapters. The Arcade Card hasn't been released in the USA, and nobody is sure what it needs. Mega Drive Genesis Partial. See the video games FAQ. Lynx Lynx Yes. Sega SG-1000 Sega Master System Yes. Game Gear Game Gear Yes. Neo-Geo Neo-Geo Yes, but languages change sometimes. ----- *The Games* The game cartridges are listed in the following format: SHOW Game system, "Japanese Title", "American title" (if any), ordering information (Company, order number), Price in Yen comments In most cases, I am not sure if the Japanese title has the same exact title as the show it was based on. In those cases, I list the game title as the show title with a question mark in parenthesis immediately after it. "Digital Comic": This type of game is almost unknown in the US (though I think it did start here, with "Infocomics"). It's basically a semi-animated comic book/anime hybrid where the player chooses the next step off of a menu. "Adventure Game": This notation typically means something with a lot of menu selection; if on CD it's probably similar to a digital comic or to live action games like Night Trap or It Came from the Desert. ----- AKIRA Famicom, "Akira" (?), N/A Taito ???, Y6800 ALISIA DRAGOON Mega Drive, "Alisia Dragoon", "Alisia Dragoon" Game Arts, Y7800 (Character appeared in some manga and anime. Defeating Shampoo's grandmother is easy but then you have to fight Shampoo's dad and he's tough! This game is loads of fun and the BGM music is superb.
