This year's shirt features a kickass picture by Robert DeJesus, featuring the con's mascot: Hiroko-chan. A description follows, and we will upload a GIF file of the design to the venice archive at venice.tcp.com. Like last year, the shirts will be white 100% cotton Tees, available in M, L, XL, 2XL, and 3XL. The shirts will be printed with a four-color process, allowing for an infinite number of colors in the design. The picture features a blue-ish concrete wall in the background with a big "OTAKON 1995" (2 lines) chiseled into it. In the foreground is a black-and-yellow construction barrier and Hiroko-chan in a tan and grey municipal worker-type jumpsuit holding a big pneumatic chisel. Image area is approximately 12.4" x 13.25". Prices are $15.00 each. The first run should be done in time for ANIMEast, November 11th-13th (hope to see you there). Please add $3.00 shipping, regardless of the number of shirts ordered. THE VIDEO PROGRAM - As a primarily video-oriented convention, OTAKON '95 will be running three seperate tracks of video programming in theatre-style video rooms, featuring the best and latest in commercial and fan-subtitled anime. In addition, we are adding a FOURTH track, dedicated to Japanese and Hong Kong live-action film, for a total of over 250 hours of video to choose from! All of our theatres feature state-of-the-art video projection systems and stereo sound, and three of them (2 anime, 1 LA) will run around the clock, so there's _always_ something on. Our video rooms are just the thing if your between panels, or just want to relax and check out that new OAV. OTAKON'95 plans to premiere some NEW, NEVER-BEFORE SUBTITLED ANIME at the con, so don't miss it. PANEL PROGRAMMING - The heart and soul of any convention is in its panelling, and OTAKON'95 promises to be no different. Panel topics range from the informative to the absurd, such as... ...So what _can_ you do with a Zentraedi Battle fleet? (Anime Gaming) Music Videos and Fan Parodies: Creativity Gone Horribly Wrong? Yaohan Ho! A Survival Guide to Anime Shopping Costume Play as a Way of Life The Fine Art of Translation: Adaption or Transliteration? You Know You're an Otaku When... or, What's a Life, and Where Can I Get One? just to name a few. Meet representatives of the leading anime companies in America. Talk with guests about translations or online news services. Argue with your fellow fan over which is better: Maison Ikkoku of Orange Road, or discuss the significance of the Macross Valkyrie transformation. At OTAKON, there'll be a panel for YOU. In 1994, OTAKON brought you workshops on fan-subtitling and cel painting. In 1995, we have expanded workshops to their own track, and we've added a few new topics as well. From costuming, to modeling, to video production, OTAKON is your source for hands-on instruction in the college of anime fandom. CONTESTS - OTAKON'95 is proud to continue its tradition of competition in the fields of fandom. This year will include our second annual Music Video Contest, a Modeling Competition, Video Gaming Tournaments, and we are tentatively scheduling a costume contest and masquerade. MUSIC VIDEO CONTEST - OTAKON'95 will once again be holding a Music Video Contest, with prizes to be awarded to the best videos submitted. Videos will be shown throughout the convention video program, with the winners to be decided by convention attendees. Staff and guests of OTAKON are ineligible to win prizes, but they may still enter. Volunteers/gophers are still eligible to win. A compilation tape of all entries will be given to all contestants, on the tape you submit, so please include return postage with your entry. If you will be attending OTAKON'95, return postage is not required. Please send a SASE to the address below for a contest entry form, a set of FINAL rules for entry, and a release statement authorizing OTAKON'95 to show your video. Rules are as follows, but are subject to change at any time. If you send for the information packet: 0. NO MORE THAN 2 ENTRIES PER PERSON. If you submit more than two videos, we reserve the right to choose the two which will be entered. If you have a 'demo reel' with more than 2 videos on it, please indicate which 2 videos you wish to enter in the contest. 1. Must be set to music. 2. Videos must be at least 30 seconds, and no longer than 8 minutes. 3. No use of pre-subtitled footage (ie- no US commercial tapes) 4. Content must be somehow anime-related. 5. Submission deadline for mail-in entries is July 15th, 1994 6. Must sign a statement of authenticity, stating that the video you submit is your own work, not that of someone else. 7. Must sign a release statement authorizing OTAKON to show your video. 8. Staff and guests of OTAKON are not eligible to win prizes, but may still enter. 9. ALL ENTRIES MUST BE SUBMITTED BY MAIL. We will not allow any submissions at the con. ANIME MODELLING COMPETITION- OTAKON is currently working on organizing an anime modelling competition. There are two categories: 1) plastic models, and 2) vinyl/resin/custom kits. The latter category is essentially all models _not_ made of plastic, but will mostly refer to resin/vinyl character models. Prizes will be awarded to the best entries, judged by a selection of staff and guests. We'll have entrants register on con weekend, so don' t worry about pre-registering for the contest. Please send a SASE to the address above for complete rules and a registration form. DEALERS ROOM - The OTAKON '94 dealers room was a disappointment to some: a scheduling conflict with Anime America cut a lot of potential dealers out of the picture. OTAKON'95 has no such burden, and as a result our dealers room has expanded to many times the size of last year. Come to shop in this supermarket of anime goods. From LDs to CDs to posters, cels, art books, laminates, manga and more, The OTAKON'95 'new-and-improved' dealers room will be _the_ place to find almost everything you're looking for. Dealers: booths are approx. 6x8' and include 2 "dealer" memberships at no charge. Please call the OTAKON'95 info line at (814) 867-3478 to have a dealer information and registration packet sent to you. Hurry! We have a limited number of tables and we fully expect to sell them all well in advance of the convention. Don't miss this opportunity to reach out to new customers across the eastern United States. ART SHOW AND AUCTION - Fan produced art has long been an aspect of anime fandom, and in order to provide a venue in which artists can showcase their art, and display works for sale, OTAKON is sponsoring a traditional convention art show and auction. Both 2-dimensional art such as drawings and paintings, as well as 3- dimensional art such as sculpture, etc. will be accepted. Art will be displayed in a secure area throughout the weekend, with saleable pieces to be sold on Sunday. Mail-in art be graciously accepted, but be sure to include return shipping with your art submissions. Please call the OTAKON'95 info line at (814) 867-3478 to have a set of art show entry instructions, bid tags for you to fill in, and a registration form Hours for the Art Show are expected to be: 6:00 PM - 9:00 PM Friday 10:00 AM - 6:00 PM Saturday 10:00 AM - 6:00 PM Sunday There are no art show hours on Monday Set-up: 1:00 PM - 6:00 PM Friday Auction: 7:00 PM Sunday The submission deadline for mail-in art is August 15, 1995. Bidding on pieces will be registered written bid throughout the weekend, with three bids to auction. Attendees wishing to bid on art will register at the art show and receive a number. We will provide bid tags to be placed next to art with the following information: Title - Artist - Piece Number - (our use) Notes - MINIMUM BID - $ 3 lines of bidder number / bid amount There is a 10% commission on all sales, and artists will be paid on Sunday for any of their art that is sold. Mail-in artists will be paid the following week. Art flats are 4' X 4', and there is an $10/flat hanging fee. However, this fee counts towards commission payment, so if you rent two flats, and sell $200 of art at the auction, you still only pay $20 total. If however you only sold $80 of art, you would have paid $10. In addition to flats, we also have tables available. Tables are 3' X 2.5' and are also $10 each. All work must be your original art. No reproductions of others' work is permitted. That is not to say you may not submit pictures of existing anime characters, etc., but you may not submit copies of pictures done by someone else. Hand-painted merchandise such as mugs or T-shirts will be allowed at the discretion of the OTAKON art show staff. Normal safety regulations must be observed. Please do not submit anything with whirling and spinning blades, emitting toxic odors, or flames. I know this sounds ridiculous, but hey, it has to be said. HOTEL INFORMATION - OTAKON '95 will be held at the new Penn State Scanticon--the most advanced and comprehensive university-based conference center in the United States, featuring first-class guest accomodations, a specialty restaurant, pub, swimming pool/fitness room/sauna, and free shuttle service to downtown State College and overflow hotels. Convention room rates are set at $88/night for a single or double. Triple/Quad rates are slightly higher. Call (814) 863-5000 for reservations. We have reserved the entire hotel, so you must mention OTAKON'95 when reserving your room(s). WHERE THE HECK IS STATE COLLEGE, PA? Located at Pennsylvania's geographic center, near the Ballefonte exit of I-80 and PA-322, State College is easily reached by car from New York (4hrs), The Baltimore/DC area (3/3.5hrs), Philadelphia (3.5 hrs), and Pittsburgh/Ohio (3/3.5 hrs). The State College Airport offers both US Air and United Air Lines service, and is just minutes away from the hotel. Free shuttle service is provided. A NOTE ON PARTIES... If you plan to hold a room party, please request a "party" or "loud" room when you make your reservations. The hotel reserves the right to remove guests who disturb others, so do yourself a favor and get a "wild-party-authorized" room. WEAPONS POLICY Costuming is allowed, and in fact encouraged, at OTAKON '95. However, in respect for the other hotel guests, a "non-realistic" weapons policy will be in effect. Basically, if it looks like a real weapon, it is NOT allowed. If on the other hand it looks like a giant pink cartoon bazooka with tentacles, fine. Con staff and the hotel reserve the right to judge whether a weapon is "realistic" or not. VOLUNTEERING - Want to be a part of OTAKON from the inside? Become an OTAKON gopher. What's a 'gopher' you ask? Basically, it's a volunteer who would assist the con staff throughout the weekend performing such tasks as monitoring the video program, running errands, and relaying messages. All you need to do is give 12-16 hours of your time to the con. What's in it for me? Well, we've reserved a few rooms for 'gopher crash space' so if you volunteer at the convention, you might not need to spend extra money on a hotel room. Don't expect a great deal of privacy though since you'll be sharing these rooms with other OTAKON gophers. In addition, gophers who complete 16 hours of time at the con will have their registration fee refunded at the end of their shift. Also, we will provide food throughout the weekend. 4+ hours Friday gets you free room and food Friday night. 8+ total hours by Saturday gets you free room and food Saturday. 12+ total hours gets you free room and food Sunday night, and 16+ hours gets you your membership fee refunded. Gophers will be taken on a first-come, first served basis on Friday. We only need a limited number of volunteers, so arrive early to ensure your place on the OTAKON team. -!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!-CUT HERE-!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!- OTAKON'95 ONLINE REGISTRATION FORM - print and fill this out and mail it to the address below. _____________________________________________________________________________ |Name | |_____________________________________________________________________________ |Address | |_____________________________________________________________________________ |City |State |Zip | | | |_______________________________________________|_________|___________________ |Phone |e-mail Address | | |_______________________________|_____________________________________________ ___ | | |___| Please send me Artist registration information ___ | | |___| Please send me rules for the Music Video Contest ___ | | |___| Please send me rules for the Modeling Competition Please enclose a check or money order, payable to OTAKON'95, and send it, along with this form to: OTAKON '95 Registration c/o David Christopher Asher 661-A Waupelani Drive State College, PA 16801 Registration rates are as follows: $25 by February 19, 1995 $30 by July 9, 1995 $35 At the door Please indicate if you are interested in volunteering at the con: ___ | | |___| Yes, I'd like to volunteer T-SHIRTS QUANTITY SIZE ________ MEDIUM ________ LARGE ________ X-LARGE ________ XX-LARGE ________ XXX-LARGE Please enclose $15.00 per shirt ordered, plus $3.00 shipping, regardless of number of shirts ordered -!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!-CUT HERE-!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!- _ ______| |______ ___ | ___________ | ___/ /____|_| _________ |_| __ /__ _____/ |___ ___| __| |____ ___ ___ _____/ /__ __ | | __ |__ ___ | \ \ / / / __ _ \ \ \ | - _| / / / | \__\ / / / / / / \ \ \_\ _-- -- _ / / / / / / \ \/ / _/ / |__-| |_____| | / / _/ / _____/ / \____/ |___/ |________/ /__/ |___/ |_______/ ============================================================== O T A K O N '95: The Convention of Otaku Generation ============================================================== September 1st-4th, 1995.
