Suzuyou 505 East 2nd Ave (near Delaware) San Mateo 415-347-8626 Home-style Japanese cooking (sukiyaki, yosenabe, mizutaki, some sushi, etc.); hole-in-the-wall type place; many of the clientele are Japanese. Isobune 1451 Burlingame Ave (near El Camino Real) Burlingame 415-344-8433 Serves mainly sushi at large revolving counter in small wooden boats, although there is some table service. Dishes of sushi range from about $2.00 to $4.00 per plate, depending on the type of fish. Kisaku 47 East 4th Ave (near El Camino Real) San Mateo 415-347-4121 Authentic Japanese food; table and counter service with lots of kosara/tsumami (appetizer) choices plus sushi and other typical fare. Many of the clientele are Japanese businessmen. Has tatami room. This is the former location of Koharu, which is no longer in business. Kamameshi House 2270 Westborough Square South San Francisco 415-952-0444 One of the few places where you can get kamameshi, this restaurant is part of a very popular chain in the Philippines (where Japanese food is considered a very fancy meal). Located in a shopping center. Juban 1204 Broadway Burlingame 415-347-2300 Delicious, do-it-yourself Japanese-style Korean barbecue. Recommended Japanese Restaurants in San Francisco General Fare Hana Restaurant 408 Irving Street (near Sixth Ave) San Francisco (Inner Sunset District) Wide variety of Japanese food at reasonable prices. Kissaten Fare On the Bridge 1581 Webster, Kinokuniya Building San Francisco (Japantown) 415-922-7765 The only place in the Bay Area we know of that exclusively serves authentic Japanese-style Western food that you would find in a Japanese kissaten (coffee shop). Located in the Japan Center, they offer a variety of curry-rice dishes, spaghetti, gratin, drinks, desserts, etc. Okonomiyaki There are only two places in San Francisco that we know of where you can eat okonomiyaki. Sanppo Restaurant 1702 Post St (near Buchanan)Japantown) 415-346-3486 Popular restaurant serving a variety of Japanese food also offers ochazuke and chanko nabe (the sumo wrestler's delight). Tokyo Sukiyaki 225 Jefferson St San Francisco (Fisherman's Wharf Area) 415-775-9030 We figured this to be a tourist trap restaurant but to our surprise found it to have some unusual and authentic Japanese dishes as well as classy service from kimono-clad waitresses. Has tatami rooms and sushi bar. -Style Dim Sum Cafe Pacifica 333 Bush (near Montgomery) San Francisco (Downtown Financial District) 415-296-8203 This is part of a chain of restaurants in Tokyo that serves Japanese-style dim sum (a bit lighter and less oily than Chinese dim sum). It is also a microbrewery. Highly recommended. Airport Section) Kui Shin Bo 22 Peace Plaza San Francisco (Japantown) Located in the Japan Center, offers regular fare but serves good, fresh sushi as well. Hamano Sushi 1332 Castro St San Francisco (Noe Valley District) 415-826-0825 Serves a variety of fare but the sushi is especially good. Nice decor, popular restaurant. Japanese-French La Belle Saison 200 23rd Ave (at Clement) San Francisco (Richmond District) 415-751-7066 Run by a Japanese chef who studied in France, this restaurant strikes a nice blend between the two cuisines. South Bay and Peninsula San Francisco Bay Area Japanese Restaurants Sushi Main Street 315 Main Street Half Moon Bay 415-726-6336 Definitely worth a trip to the Coastside, this tiny sushi-only restaurant has a small sushi bar and about four or five tables and serves very fresh sushi at reasonable prices. Be prepared for a wait. Fuki Sushi 4119 El Camino Real Palo Alto 415-494-9383 Nicely decorated restaurant that serves a wide variety of Japanese dishes. Also has outdoor dining area. Gonbei 1438 El Camino Real Menlo Park 415-329-1799 Specializing in teishoku and nabe dishes, this is a very popular restaurant. There is also a San Jose location (193 E. Jackson St.) that is supposed to be very good as well. Ikenohana 20625 Alves Dr. Cupertino 408-252-6460 Long a favorite of nearby Apple employees, this restaurant sports a pretty outdoor pond and a good variety of dishes including specialties such as chawan mushi. Indiana Sakura 7201 N. Keystone Ave Indianapolis 46220 317-259-4171 Go to I465North. Take the 431 exit and go south toward Indianaplis. Go approx2 miles; Sakura is on the left side. Hours - T,W,Th 5-10; F,Sat 5-11; Sun 3-9; Lunch: Tue-Sat 11:30-2:30 Serves home-style Japanese food including sushi, sashimi, tempura and sukiyaki. Try the original sushi creations. Go 1 mile and turn left, or east, on 86th St. Hours - Dinner only - Mon-Sat 5-10. Closed Sunday. Traditional style dining in a posh atmosphere. Limited menu includes Japanese favorites from sushi to tempura to sukiyaki. Somewhat expensive but worth it for the chance to eat amongst kimono-clad waitresses at low tables. Hours - 11am-10pm Mon-Sat Considered by some to be the best Japanese restaurant in the Dallas area, Nakamoto offers a sushi bar, tatami rooms and fare such as shabu-shabu and tenpura. Canada Jardin Sakura rue de la Montagne Montreal, Quebec, Canada Downtown on rue de la Montagne, between Sherbrooke and rue St. Catherine. Hours - 11-3 and 5-11 Good Japanese food at reasonable prices. London, England Tokyo Diner 2 Newport Place Leicester Square London WC2H 7JJ 0171-287-8777 Open 365 days a year from noon till midnight Run by a British-born Japanophile who spent a lot of time in Japan, this restaurant offers authentic Japanese food including noodles, donburi, sushi, etc. Wagamama 4 Streatham St. London WC1a 1JB 071-323-9223 One of the trendiest new restaurants in London. The queues are always long. The setting is a trendy cafeteria-style place that is very noisy and not so good for dinner conversation. Authentic noodles, ramen, yakisoba, etc. Watch out for the chicken, however, which, like in all of England, is grilled and a bit fatty. Absolutely delicious if not completely authentic. Paris, France Paris has its own "Little Tokyo" area in the 9th arrondissement called L'Opera. Here you'll find Japanese bookstores, grocery stores and restaurants. You may wonder why you'd want to eat Japanese food in Paris, with all its fine French cuisine, but Japanese food is sometimes cheaper if you're on a budget or if you just miss "furusato no aji." Osaka 163 Rue St Honore Paris (9th) 42 60 66 01 Located two minutes from the Louvre, there are two restaurants here with the same name; one serves regular Japanese fare and the other specializes in ramen. We had toshi koshi soba here on New Year's Eve and it was delicious.
