  ART OF THE FAN: CHINA, KOREA, AND JAPAN
     
   April 15 - October 8, 1995.
   At the Arthur M. Sackler Museum in Cambridge, the exhibition traces
   the evolution of the fan in East Asia from the circular "lollipop"  
   style to the better-known folding style that was produced throughout
   East Asia from the thirteenth century onward. For general information,

  BLACK SHIPS FESTIVAL

   July 20 - 24, 1995.
   The 12th Annual Black Ships Festival takes place in Newport, Rhode 
   Island with sushi demonstration, children's activities, kite making
   workshops, martial arts demonstrations, ikebana workshops, tea
   ceremony, kimono show, and many other activities. For information

  MINGEI EXHIBITION TOUR

   July 22, 1995. 2:45 pm.
   Join fellow Japan Society members for a special tour of "Mingei: Two
   Centuries of Japanese Folk Art" exhibition at the Peabody Essex Museum
   there until November 26. Exhibit curator, Mr. Peter Fetchko, will lead
   you on a tour of 140 folk art pieces from the Japan Folk Crafts Museum
   in Tokyo featuring textiles, musical instruments, woodwork, and folk
   paintings. The cost is only $6 for Society members and only $8 for

  KONNICHIWA CLUB CRUISE
   
   July 27, 1995. 6:30 pm.
   The Japan Society of Boston is proud to present the Fourth Annual
   Konnichiwa Club Harbor Cruise. Socialize and relax on the Boston
   Harbor Sunset Cruiseship. Boat leaves One Long Wharf at 7 pm.
   Admission is only $10 for members and only $12 for non-members.

   JAPAN: A LIVING TRADITION

   August 4 - 5, 1995. Begins August 4, 7:30 pm.
   Presented by New Acropolis, this 2-day seminar of lectures explores
   the world of the Tea Ceremony, Abstract Landscape, and the Samurai.

   THE ART AND CULTURE OF JAPAN, CHINA, AND INDIA

   August 7 - 11, 1995.
   Five-day institute will explore Japanese screen painting, prints,
   netsuke, and animation through lectures, group discussions, and
   hands-on activities. At the Worcester Art Museum, MA. For further

   PEABODY ESSEX ART MUSEUM FESTIVAL

   August 19, 1995. 4 - 8 pm.
   Magical dolls, bamboo flutes, and colorful kimono textiles are just a
   few of the Japanese folk arts demonstrated during this day-long
   Japanese summer festival and beer garden. Try your hand at
   calligraphy, add your own touch to a shoji screen, and enjoy Japanese
   style picnic food while watching Ninots puppet shows. In the evening
   hours there will be karaoke at the beer garden, folk dancing, and a
   traditional Japanese grill menu. For further information, please call

   A comprehensive tour of Japanese architecture offers a rare
   opportunity to gain access to much that is normally unavailable to
