Sackler Museum in Cambridge, the exhibition traces the evolution of the fan in East Asia from the circular "lollipop" style to the better-known folding style that was produced throughout East Asia from the thirteenth century onward. The 12th Annual Black Ships Festival takes place in Newport, Rhode Island with sushi demonstration, children's activities, kite making workshops, martial arts demonstrations, ikebana workshops, tea ceremony, kimono show, and many other activities. Join fellow Japan Society members for a special tour of "Mingei: Two Centuries of Japanese Folk Art" exhibition at the Peabody Essex Museum there until November 26. Exhibit curator, Mr. Peter Fetchko, will lead you on a tour of 140 folk art pieces from the Japan Folk Crafts Museum in Tokyo featuring textiles, musical instruments, woodwork, and folk paintings. Magical dolls, bamboo flutes, and colorful kimono textiles are just a few of the Japanese folk arts demonstrated during this day-long Japanese summer festival and beer garden. Try your hand at calligraphy, add your own touch to a shoji screen, and enjoy Japanese style picnic food while watching Ninots puppet shows.
