A few of Japan’s top anime voice actresses take on covers of popular/classic punk rock songs.  Definitely geared towards the fans of seiyuu music and fans of the voice actresses who sing on the album.

I have to admit that one of the things that is always intriguing here at J!-ENT is when we receive these obscure albums that are rather interesting (we’ve been following Japanese releases for a long time, so we’re not easily shocked) and some may say the typical “WTF” or curiosity gets the best out of us.

So, when I saw this cover of anime girls ala super deformed (shrunken mode) giving the middle finger, that alone made me want to check the album out and that’s when I realized, “wow, this is a punk song cover album”.

“Pancolle – Voice Actresses’ Legendary Punk Song Collection” features the anime voice actresses who are managed or have a tie to Avex Entertainment Inc.

Voice actresses on the album include Haruko Momoi (“Aoi Yori Aoshi”, “Nurse Witch Komugi”, “UFO Ultraimaiden Valkyrie”), Haruna Ikezawa (“Sgt. Frog”, “Virus Buster Serge”, “One Piece”), Kaori Shimizu (“Banner of the Stars”, “Stratos 4″, “Heroic Age”), Mai Kadowaki (“Mahou Sensei Negima”, “Negima!”, “Ikkitousen”), Rie Tanaka (“Chobits”, “Mobile Suit Gundam Seed”, “Air Gear”, “Rozen Maiden”) and Yuko Goto (“Hidamari Sketch”, “The Melancholoy of Suzumiya Haruhi”, “Tears to Tiara”).

For the most part, the voice actresses are singing in character but there are some who forego their high seiyuu voices and sing in their normal voice.  Among the most notable are Haruko Momoi’s cover of the Blondie song “Call Me”, Rie Tanaka’s cover of the Sex Pistol’s “Anarchy in the UK”.

But for the most part, those who are into seiyuu music (especially the sugary sweet idol pop-style of music), will more than likely enjoy these cover songs.  Most of them are pop covers of popular punk and rock songs by the Clash, Sex Pistols, Ramones, Iggy & the Stooges, Nirvana, Green Day and more.  But again, most of the time the ladies are singing in character.

Do not expect any hard core metal thrashing music.  Songs such as Yuko Goto’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” is subdued and slow-paced while Mai Kadowaki’s cover of The Offsprings “Pretty Fly For a White Guy” is rather cutesy and of course, removes the humorous edge of the original version.

But of course, this album is not geared for those looking for a kick ass punk rock album.  This is more for the enjoyment of those who enjoy the cute, high-pitched voice actresses singing popular punk songs.  And seeing them as cute as they can.  And if you are that type of fan that digs that, this compilation album is definitely for you!
