“If you enjoy bands such as JET and Good Charlotte, definitely give the Japanese band FAT PROP a chance! Singing English and sporting that similar musical style, “CHANGE THE FUTURE” is definitely a an album that sounds similar but something refreshing of what kind of rock music is being released from Japan today.”

I have to be honest that I have never heard of FAT PROP before. In fact, during my research of the band, there was not too much information about them.
But what I can say is that if you are a fan of bands such as JET, Yellowcard and Good Charlotte, you will more than likely dig FAT PROP.
In fact, next to Ellegarden which we reviewed on J!-ENT before, FAT PROP is a Japanese band that embraces the rock music such as the bands we mentioned and brings it to Japan and sing them in English.
The band consists of Imabeppu Tomohiro (vocals and guitar), Nagi Kenichiro (bass), Mukai Kouchichi (guitar) and Uehara Akikane (drums) and all in all, I like this album a lot.
Although the music is something we in the US probably hear a lot of through MTV and on the radio, it’s interesting and refreshing to hear Japanese bands sporting that style of rock music.
The first track “Change the future” has a style that is very reminiscent to a Yellowcard favorites such as “Ocean Avenue” and the second track “S.G.S” has a very JET “Are You Gonna Be My Girl” feel to it.
There are some tracks that are very interesting such as “Pretty Baby” which has that retro-60’s music sound which is pretty cool. In a way, it has that goofiness and fun of the Beatles “When I’m 64″.
But as you think of similarities, once you get to songs such as “June” and “Everyday”, the band then starts to incorporate different styles of music and perhaps, the band is inspired by many bands and not restrictive to a certain style and just has fun doing various styles of rock songs and singing in English.
Nevertheless, I found “CHANGE THE FUTURE” to be an entertaining album and a delight because of its refreshing sound as opposed to other rock music that you would hear from other Japanese music bands.
As for the CD insert booklet, pretty much the English lyrics of the songs but also the Japanese translation of those songs. Also, included is information on the band’s nationwide tour.

From an American standpoint, listening to FAT PROP’s music from “CHANGE THE FUTURE” is no different from the many bands that you hear that sound like some other band and so forth.
But from a Japanese standpoint, for a Japanese band incorporating that alternative rock style from what other Japanese bands are doing is actually quite refreshing.
So, I have to give FAT PROP some “props” for being band that sings in English (and the English pronunciation is ok) and sporting that sound in Japan.
All in all, “CHANGE THE FUTURE” is a pretty cool album and definitely feels similar but yet refreshing at the same time.
