I’m currently listening to the Japanese rock band 100s which features vocalist Nakamura Kazuyoshi who was known in the 90’s for fusing Beatles-style music with Japanese rock.
Nakamura joins 100s members Ikeda Takafumi (keyboard), Machida Machihiro (guitar), Ano Shinichi (guitar) and Yamaguchi Hiro (bass) who are back with their second album “ALL!!!!!!”.
To be truthful, I have not heard of Nakamura Kazuyoshi’s previous solo works, nor have I listened to 100s previous album or CD singles.
Despite the reviews of Nakamura’s music leaning towards Beatles and Brit-rock (I was thinking it would be old school Mr. Children type of sound), for me, 100s is Japanese alternative rock which leans more towards melodic rock and they can be compared to many rock bands that are out in Japan that are within the melodic rock and emo spectrum.
With two CD singles such as “Momotose” and “Kibo” (both released in 2007) on this album, the CD singles are a good taste of the music that you will find on the album.
Nakamura’s vocals remind me of Blink182’s Tom Delonge with a mix of Sting and their music is happy nevertheless. Songs such as “Na Mirai” shows off the band’s music and how they can truly rock and of course, songs such as “Moshiko no Mama”
which shows us the gentler ballad side of the 100s.
The CD+DVD version features a 42-minute DVD featuring a music video (a total of 10) for nearly all the tracks on the album.
The music videos were created by the band and pretty much a fun concept with the group having fun in tracks iike “Kibo” as the group is eating, drinking and playing the Nintendo Wii in a bar-like setting, to the group playing music in an indoor or outdoor setting for tracks like “Tsutaeruyo” and “Momotose”.
All in all, it’s a fun album to listen to and if you enjoy music from bands like Triceratops and possibly even Mr. Children, you may dig the 100s.
