Random Coffee Talk

August 27, 2008 by rabi

To celebrate my new banner that my friend Vivian has created for me specifically for this staff blog, I thought I should at least stick to the topic, and so this post is about my habit (addiction?) of going to coffee shops on almost a daily basis.

Since junior year in college, I’ve developed a love for cappucino.  So my daily routine had always consisted of studying at campus coffee shops in between classes and/or before tests.  That seemed like the cool thing to do (apparently it still is).  That was like… more than 10 years ago.

One day I remember I had 2 finals - one 8am, one 1:30pm.  I had a double cappucino before my 1st final, and another one before my 2nd final…  Problem was, by the start of my 2nd final, I was so jittery and my hand was shaking so much, I had trouble writing my paper.  That was the first time that ever happened to me.  I thought maybe I should cut back.

But I didn’t, and so ever since I started working, I often go to Starbucks or Caribou Coffee to get my cappucino or my latte to-go in the morning.

In 2002, Starbucks came out with this smart idea of a prepaid card that you can even set up to automatically refill money to it once the balance reaches a preset amount that you decide.  I also moved to California where Caribou didn’t have branches.  And so I got one of those when the idea first came out, and set up my refill to $50 each time once my balance on the card drops below $10.

Probably a mistake on my part, for I have given Starbucks a huge chunk of change during the past 6 years.  They have come out with new card designs throughout these years, but I just stuck with mine.  Cuz that’s like the “original” one.

The top plastic is already peeling off (top left). It’s kinda all beat up…

Back in July when I was in the Bronx, I was actually pretty proud of myself that I survived a full week without a drop of Starbucks.  But of course, now I’m back on my “schedule”.

My favorite drink has changed throughout these years.

Lately, it’s a grande non-fat vanilla latte @ 140 degrees.  What’s yours?

Cool… I’m curious what Michelle has in terms of those cards since she’s worked for Starbucks in Seattle for many years as a barista.

I used to go to Starbucks all the time during the evenings, mainly to get a drink and watch what’s on ustream or justin.tv. as I hooked up my EVDO to my laptop and just chill for an hour. Stopped doing that back in January though… Mainly because usually when I go to a local Starbucks, it was close to a video game shop and I have too many video games as it is that I buy and hardly have time to play.

wow thank you word press for not taking my long reply D: anyways… I have at least 36 different designs for starbucks cards… I probably have at least a couple more that I can’t find right now. But I have some rare ones too… I have the Ray Charles one, the Paul McCartney one, the Pike Place one(only available at the 1st Starbucks in Pike Place) the Ichiro one, the Hawaii one, and the Hear Music one.

If you go to Safeway and get the preloaded starbucks cards, they might still have the design you have. At least they used to… They might have updated to the newer core card now.

As for favorite drinks… right now my favorite drinks include: iced grande americano w/ no room and no water, banana chocolate vivanno with 4 pumps of chocolate, soy, and an add shot, and a orange mango vivanno with soy. woo.
