[JAPAN] Surfing lessons at Shonan Beach

July 19, 2008 by KNDY

Daily Yomiuri’s Christoph Mark recently wrote an article on surfing lessons in Japan.  Mark wrote, “Growing up, summer only ever meant two things to me: No school and the beach. Though my coastal hometown was rarely the boiling paradise that Tokyo becomes this time of year, my natural reaction was to get to the water and cool off. (The 50-kilometer daily traffic jam into town told me I wasn’t the only one who felt this way.) There, I spent hours playing, running, bodyboarding and basking in the sun. Never before or since have I been in better shape.”

“As far away as that lifestyle feels to me now, the reality is that it’s not that far out of reach. Just over an hour outside of Tokyo lies the Shonan beach areas of Kanagawa Prefecture. Their mild waves and outstretched sandy beaches offer a perfect getaway and a rare opportunity for parents and their children to learn to surf or windsurf together.”

“WarmUp Shonan on Kugenuma Beach offers two-hour parent-child surfing lessons. The lessons, which can be arranged through Accept Surfing School, use highly buoyant longboards so first-timers can get a taste of the fun of surfing.”
