“Since winning a Japan Academy Award for best newcomer at the age of 18 in 1998, Lena Tanaka has shown an impressive versatility in many genres, from romantic comedy to horror to drama. “I always wanted to be an actress ever since I can remember,” says Tanaka who was born in Fukuoka. This is her first interview with an English publication and Tanaka (who recently changed her first name from Rena to Lena) is enjoying the occasion, even trying out a few phrases in English. “I’d like to take lessons and study acting in English one day,” she says.”
“Tanaka started her career as a model when she was 15. Two years later, she moved to Tokyo and began her movie career. In her short career, she has gained many fans, especially in China (her website has a Chinese language page). After her award-winning performance in “Ganbatte Ikimasshoi,” Tanaka received a best actress nomination for “Hatsukoi.” in 2001.”
“When I was young, I didn’t know anything about acting. I was so happy just to be in show business,” she says. “Now that I’ve worked with so many great actors and actresses, I have learned there are different styles of acting and the various ways directors express their ideas.”
