[FASHION] Tokyo Street Style / Style-Arena Picks of the Week

It’s our Tokyo Street Style Picks of the week from this week’s Style-Arena fashion showcase:

HARAJUKU: With Summer now in full gear, you see a lot of people sporting t-shirts and shorts but you will catch people still trying to keep it stylin’ as the temperatures rise.  So, this person stood out this week as someone not sporting the t-shirt and shorts.  Probably a bit hot wearing these outfit in the heat but you got to hand it to him for keeping cool with his gray/silver and black outfit.

SHIBUYA: As mentioned in our Harajuku section, hot weather really makes people not to think about what they wear so much and sometimes comfort in the heat is priority over style.  But there are always people who will try to find ways to influence their fashion by simplistic means to stand out.   And for Shibuya, you have to give it to this woman with her short shorts, pantyhose, yellow shoes and of course the red bows and purse to really bring color out to a dark outfit.

OMOTESANDOU: Omotesandou really had pretty cool selections but this guy’s outfit really captured my attention.  Again, stylin’ in the hot weather but I really dig the overall outfit and how the jacket and his bag show color coordination with the browns and blacks in his outfit.

DAIKANYAMA: There has been somewhat of a hippie revival in terms of clothing in Japan and definitely quite a bit of floral.  But this person’s outfit is just simple and sexy.  The dress is sexy but paired with the socks and outlandish sandals definitely stood out for me.

GINZA: Ginza is always known for its expensive fashion during the winter but with Summer now upon us, Ginza offerings this week were casual.  But of the offerings this week, this woman’s outfit stood out for me.  Simple but yet a good balance of the white, brown and red.

[FASHION] Tokyo Street Style / Style-Arena Picks of the Week

It’s our Tokyo Street Style Picks of the week from this week’s Style-Arena fashion showcase:

HARAJUKU: Our pick of the week goes to this woman sporting a simple bust stylish skirt and a good utilization of pink, black and white in her overall outfit and accessories (backpack and umbrella).  The hairstyle tends to be more Shibuya-ish but all in all,  my pick for the week.

SHIBUYA: Shibuya was interesting because of the really interesting fashion choices which featured a guy in a hot pink shirt, a guy wearing tights and much more.  But I decided that my pick would go to this guy.  The cut off jeans, white t-shirt are rather simplistic, but good utilization of the jacket, accessories such as the necklace, belt, hat and bag.  Simplistic but stylish.

OMOTESANDO: Omotesando this week showcased “floral” outfits for the women.  And there were many outfits which I saw as casual.  But in the end, I chose this person’s outfit among the casual outfits featured.  Her slender body and the jeans emphasize her body and fit her well.

DAIKANYAMA: Daikanyama fashion offerings this week was not as eye appealing.  A lot of more fashion “Dont’s” to nothing that caught my attention.  But in the end, I chose this guy because although simplistic, the good utilization of browns in his overall outfit from the hat, belt, shoes and backpack. with the lighter beige jacket and to enhance the blues in his outfit.

GINZA: It was a drenching day at Ginza and many were out with their “it might rain” outfits.  But for the classy city, this woman’s outft stood out….a jacket that really showcased her legs, although I do have a bit of a reservation for the pink sandals, all in all, my pick for the week.

[FASHION][JAPAN] The “Happy Face” re-emerges

Daily Yomiuri reported, “The little yellow happy face that was all the rage in the 1970s is back, and surprisingly, without any irony.”

“The latest incarnations of the beaming icon take inspiration from smiley-face emoticons that can often be found used by young people on blogs and e-mail.”

“Such faces have been altered to convey feelings and sentiments other than simply “Be happy!” Some have crosses or stars for eyes, while others have their tongues sticking out.”

“Don’t think the symbol has been relegated to lower-tier designers. Major brands such as Italy’s Moschino Cheap & Chic, have added sketches of happy faces to skirts and T-shirts from their spring/summer line. Popular New York label 3.1 Phillip Lim, too, has printed a crimson-lipped smiley on one of its shirts.”

[FASHION][JAPAN] Goodbye to school girl uniforms, hello slacks…

Mainichi Daily News reported, “Slacks are slowly becoming part of schoolgirl uniforms throughout the country, with a Sapporo junior high school’s decision earlier this year to make them compulsory threatening to end the hegemony of the hem.”

“Slacks replaced skirts as girls’ compulsory garb at the Sapporo Municipal Minamigaoka Junior High School from spring this year, although pupils will be able to wear skirts for about three months over the summer period.”

“School officials say the main reason for making slacks compulsory is health, and that it’s common for pupils to go for what’s called the Haniwa Look — tracksuit pants worn underneath a very short skirt — during the colder months. Head teacher Minoru Sasaki said the school decided to make a formal change.”

“It was sad to see how the girls were struggling in the cold. And the Haniwa Look was ugly. We worried that the cold may affect the girls’ health, so we made slacks obligatory,” he says.

“Opinions on the change are divided, with some praising slacks for their warmth and ease of movement, and others complaining that the trousers make them too hot.”

[FASHION] Tokyo Street Style / Style-Arena Picks of the Week

It’s our Tokyo Street Style Picks of the week from this week’s Style-Arena fashion showcase:

HARAJUKU: Harajuku, the city that sports plenty of off-beat but really cool fashion.  This week featured quite a good number of fashion from individuals on Style-Arena for the city and I went with this guy in the end.  From the jacket, pants to the boots and even the man-bag.  Overall cool look and choice of colors.

SHIBUYA: This week’s choices were also a bit difficult because there were a good number of fashion for the city.  And Japan is in that in between stage now of weather getting warmer but still trying to incorporate some winter fashion.  So, with that being said, the person that I chose was this woman who had a cool outfit (Although not sure if there was a cooling trend in Shibuya to wear that much in this part of May) that stood out for me.  Good use of the black, gray and browns.

OMOTESANDO: With Shibuya showcasing their Winter/Spring wear, Omotesando picks of the week are in tune with the warmer weather and my pick goes to the following woman.  A cool spring, white dress and hair nicely dolled up.  Simple and in tune for the cool Spring season.

DAIKANYAMA: This week’s selection for Daikanyama sported off-beat fashion but it was nice to see selections that really emphasized the Spring with pastel or colorful fashion.  So, Daikanyama is the city that really featured the season’s colors.  But as for my pick, that was a hard one… But I decided to go for the brighter colors than the dark and this guy’s fashion, it’s once thing to wear oversized pants but it’s another thing to wear a very bright and cool jacket/sweater to emphasize the blacks throughout the overall outfit.

GINZA: The area that is not offbeat.  It’s proper, it’s elegant and classy and very expensive.  So, it was interesting to see how Ginza women in 2008 would sport their fashion as things get to warm up.  Of course, the boots and long coats and scarves can no longer come in play, so overall emphasis were on the dress and of course the expensive purse.  This week, I went for simple.  And for the Spring season, this woman’s fashion just stood out (no not because of her legs…, well maybe just a little).  But her outfit was colorful and the purse was as colorful as well.  Her outfit was simple but still sexy.  Maybe not to Ginza-ish but still, it stood out for me for the week

[FASHION] Tokyo Street Style / Style-Arena Picks of the Week

It’s our Tokyo Street Style Picks of the week from this week’s Style-Arena fashion showcase:

HARAJUKU: This week’s fashion features this week on Style-Arena featured some interesting hippy fashion.  But since Harajuku is a city where anything goes, we have to give it to this guy who definitely shows us “anything goes”.

SHIBUYA: We go to Shibuya trendy and is it me, or do we see a hint of Koda Kumi diva in this woman’s fashion.  Nevertheless, very Shibuya and the boots and shorts are just hot!

OMOTESANDOU: Omotesando is like a bridge between Shibuya and Ginza. But this week’s features a bit more of an alternative flavor and this person caught my eye.  Maybe the purple hat and red purse made me zero in on her because of that.  But for this week’s offerings, this woman’s outfit was different.

DAIKANYAMA: I tend to find overalls, not my thing.  Ok, I can’t stand them.  But for this person, she did something different to it.  Finding ways to make it trendy and thus, I’ll give this week to her.

GINZA: No, no expensive outfits that I have seen in this week’s Ginza offerings which tend to showcase expensive to elegant fashion of the women. And it’s nice to see the heavy coats now gone and to see the ladies wear less black and more whites and pastels this week.  So, for Ginza - I give it to this woman.  Not too overly Ginza but yet chic!

SPECIAL SELECTION OF THE WEEK: This week seems to be more about flower child/hippy nostalgic type of clothing but this person deserves my special selection because look at those slipper/boots or whatever you want to call them.  Wearing something simple but accentuating that simpleness with something cool or eye catching, I find appealing.

[TAIWAN][FASHION] Clothing company inspired by Japanese group Pizzicato Five

Taipei Times reported, ” Even in Ximending (西門町), where the progenitors of youth culture busy themselves finding fresh modes of expression, Pizza Cut Five (PCF) is something of a curiosity. The clothing company is disguised as a pizza joint, complete with peach refrigerated cabinets, piles of pizza boxes and a pink delivery scooter called A-fu (阿福)”

“The brand originated on the Net (www.pizzacutfive.com) three years ago as a concept-oriented fashion project paying tribute to Pizzicato Five, a Japanese pop group credited with leading Japan’s Shibuya-kei movement (a genre the blends pop and electronica, named after the famous Tokyo district) of the 1990s.”

“Cleverly designed T-shirts are displayed in the fridge, sold in pizza boxes or delivered on the scooter. Though the presentation is appealing, the main advantage of the brand is its exclusivity: The made-in-Taiwan street wear is cut to fit, flatters youthful figures and is manufactured in limited editions of 20 each (priced from NT$800 to NT$1,500).”
