It has been two years since we have seen the likes of Jack Bauer and with the highly anticipated season 7 of the popular FOX drama “24″ coming back on FOX in Jan. 2009, what better than to kick the new season off with a two-hour special.

The question of what has happened to Jack Bauer after the events of Season 6 is answered in this special.

The former CTU agent doesn’t want to be found and has been traveling the world and keeping a low profile.  Now he’s in Africa helping a friend from a former special force unit, Carl Benton who now runs an orphanage.

Both Jack and Carl have a similar past with their training in the special forces and having a background of saving many lives but killing many people.  But Benton has moved on and not runaway from his demons and to help orphans in Africa and to protect them.

But as Jack was starting to feel comfortable in Africa, unfortunately, the US government has tracked him down in Africa with a subpoena to face charges of unethical use of torture on a terrorist prisoner.  Of course, Jack has no intention of going back to the US and decides to move on again.

Elsewhere in Africa, a militia is kidnapping children and forcing them to become soldiers. With more soldiers needed, the militia sets their sights on the orphanage.  Next thing you know, the militia leader receives a phone call from America and thus you learn that a major figure in the US government is collaborating with the bad guys.

Meanwhile in the US, it is a special day as incoming President Allison Taylor (Cherry Jones) is to be inaugurated.  Unfortunately for her, outgoing President (Powers Boothe) makes one more presidential decision and knowing what is happening in Africa, he evacuates all Americans from Africa and closes down the US embassy because of the militia usurping their powers.  Taylor is against that decision but what’s done is done.

Without US support, the militia knows that the orphanage has no protection and ends up killing two children from the orphanage but determined to kidnap the rest.  Of course, Jack Bauer is there to make sure these children will be protected from harm and thus sets up a confrontation between Bauer (with some help from Benton) and some members of the militia.

“24: Redemption” is just an awesome two-hour special that features great storytelling, beautiful scenery but also tons of action.

This has to be unpredented for a TV drama to film in another country but also including the Africans in the actual special as actors (and you can learn much more through the director’s commentary on the DVD).

As always, Kiefer Sutherland is always impressive as Jack Bauer and great performances throughout the board.  The African children did a great job in their roles and I give credit to the “24 staff for bringing in actor John Voight to play the role as the corrupted person in the government.

As mentioned, the cinematography capturing the scenery was just great.  The staff managed to capture the beauty and danger of Africa despite the many challenges faced during the shooting schedule.  I was truly impressed.

The storyline was just engaging, action-packed and thrilling from start to finish.  Needless to say, I can’t wait for Season 7.

As for the DVD, the DVD features two versions of “Redemption”.  The broadcast version and the extended version which has over 10 minutes of extra footage).  The extra footage are mainly dialogue between the incoming President and outgoing President and scenes that primary taking place in Washington.  You can learn more about the additional scenes from the actual commentary.

VIDEO & AUDIO:

“24: Redemption” is featured in widescreen 1:78:1.  The picture quality is vibrant..  Especially when you see the differences of the Africa and the US scenes.  Africa is featured in amber/Earthy hues and looks beautiful.  While the US has a colorful but a different sense color which leans more towards dark bluish hues.  Video quality looked vibrant and colorful.

As for audio, the show is featured in Digital 5.1 Dolby Surround.  Really good audio quality during the fighting sequences in Africa.  Otherwise, the special features mostly dialogue and the dialogue can be heard quite clearly.

SPECIAL FEATURES:

I admit that I was happy to see quite a few specials included on the DVD.  Special features are:

• The Making of 24: Redemption Featurette - This featurette is about 20 minutes long and is actually very good.  Especially if you are a filmmaker.  Director Jon Cassar, writer Howard Gordon and staff are interviewed on how it was to film in Africa but the challenges that they faced.  I was surprised to see how the weather would change in an hour-time. They could be filming and then all of a sudden, they get high winds (up to 60mph), then rain and hail and then sunlight.   So, it was definitely a challenge for them to film but they managed to do it.  But also, an advantage to work with people in South Africa in developing certain mechanical systems for the terrain and also interviews with the African talent.

• “Blood Never Dry”: Child Soldiers in Africa Featurette - In this featurette, cast from the upcoming Season 7 would read a letter from a child soldier and also a featurette that tries to explain why children are being kidnapped and becoming soldiers.  And the trauma they go through and not wanting to go home because they have committed atrocity to so many innocent people that they are deeply burdened by it.  Also, how the militias get these children so addicted to drugs.  This was a very good featurette and truly an eye opener of what is currently going on in Africa.

• Commentary by Executive Producer/Director Jon Cassar and Executive Producers Howard Gordon and Kiefer Sutherland - The commentary was also enjoyable to listen to.  From filming of the scenes to the three talking about various actors and actresses and their experience filming the special.  Also, this is probably how one would learn about scenes that are in the expanded version and are not shown on the broadcast.

• 24 Season 6 in Four Minutes Featurette - For those who missed or forgot what Season 6 is about.  This featurette features what happened during that season in four minutes.

• An Exclusive First Look at 24 Season 7 - I was very impressed by the first 15 minutes of the upcoming “Day 7″ episode of “Season 7″ which will start the “24″ series in Jan. 2009.  A lot of action and what I can I say… Tony Almeida.  It’s starts off awesome and I craved for more!

I have been watching the “24″ series since the first episode and have always been hooked on the series. But this special was one of the finest “24″ storylines and I’m glad to see that the staff went all out in filming this special.  Especially bringing the staff and filming it in Africa was just impressive. “24″ has always been a drama series that has long been admired because it has set the marker so high for a television drama series.

As for this DVD, not only was it fun to watch but if you are a film student or a person that enjoys watching “24: Redemption”, you’ll have a blast on watching how the special was created but most of all certain elements of nature that the staff had to contend with.  Especially during the rain and making it look like sunlight and also the high winds that the staff had to block out during the recording.

Also, a thumbs up for the staff including the featurette on child soldiers. This featurette was definitely an eye-opener and I was really surprised to hear the chilling words from those who soldiers who are in agony of the deaths they have caused and the permanent guilt they have to live with.

And of course, that sneak peak to excite the “24″ fan for a month until the Season 7 begins.

Overall, if you are a “24″ fan, this DVD has so much to offer.  You won’t be disappointed!

Based on the manga and anime series that has captured the attention of viewers worldwide, “Death Note” the live action film makes its way to the US on DVD.

“Death Note” is an adaption of the popular manga series written by Tsugumi Ohba and illustrated by Takeshi Obata and stars Tatsuya Fujiwara (known for his work in the popular “Battle Royale” films), directed by Shusuke Kaneko (known for the 2006 hit film “Gamera”) and the theme song “Dani California” by the popular band RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS.

The film focuses on Light Yagami (Fujiwara), an intelligent student who wants to work in criminal law and follow his father’s footsteps and catch criminals. But one day after hacking into the police department’s computer system, Fujiwara is just sickened to know that the police has released criminals who should be incarcerated. One night, Yagami discovers a notebook called “Death Note” that has specific rules:

-The human whose name is written in this note shall die.

-This note will not take effect unless the writer has the person’s face in their
mind when writing his/her name. Therefore, people sharing the same name will
not be affected.

-If the cause of death is written within 40 seconds of writing the person’s name,
it will happen.

-If the cause of death is not specified, the person will simply die of a heart
attack.

-After writing the cause of death, details of the death should be written in the next 6 minutes and 40 seconds.

-This note shall become the property of the human world, once it touches the
ground of (arrives in) the human world.

-The owner of the note can recognize the image and voice of its original owner,
i.e. a god of death.

-The human who uses this note can neither go to Heaven nor Hell.

Anxious to test this book out, Light writes the name of a criminal, thinking that the book is a joke. That is until the person’s name that was written actually dies. Thus Light finds a way to get justice and does what he can to rid the world of all evil and become “the God of the new world”. He also meets the owner of the Death Note, a shinigami (God of Death) named Ryuk, who is fascinated by Light of his ways of killing the criminals but the way his mind works.

Light who uses the name “Kira” starts writing the names of criminals in the Death Note and each die by heart attack and thus causing a frenzy in the media and the police force who now need to go after the person killing the criminals. But Kira is not your average criminal, as he is quickly generating a large fandom of people who support Kira’s goal of eliminating criminals.

Of course, the police force led by Light’s father, Soichiro Yagami, has no idea of how to go after this criminal but unbeknownst to them is a mysterious person that goes by the name of L. An intelligent detective who has an unorthodox way of catching criminals and so far, has been very succesful with his cases worldwide.

The cat and mouse chase has begun as L goes after Kira and Kira realizes his greatest enemy is L and thus the battle begins.

The film stars an all-star cast with “Battle Royale” actor Tatsuya Fujiwara as Light Yagami, Kenichi Matsuyama who starred in films “Linda Linda Linda” and “NANA” as the mysterious detective L.

Joining the two is one of Japan’s most popular actress, Asaka Seto as Naomi Misora, a former FBI agent who’s fiance is killed by Kira. Model and actress Yu Kashii as Light’s girlfriend Shiori Akino. Shigeki Hosokawa as FBI Agent Raye who is hot on the trail of catching Kira, actress Erika Toda who plays the character of pop star Misa Amane and Takeshi Kaga, best known for the host of the original “Iron Chef”, who plays the role as Light’s father and head of police, Soichiro Yagami.

VIDEO & AUDIO:

The film is featured in 16×9 anamorphic widescreen and was originally shot in 35mm (1:85:1 ratio). My main interest was to see how the CGI would be for the shinagami Ryuk. And how that would translate on film and was quite pleased with the 3D character as it looks exactly like it does in the anime and manga series.

As for audio, the film is featured in both English and Japanese via digital 5.1 and 2.0 stereo. I typically dislike English dubbing of Asian language films but what brought a smile to my face was that VIZ used the original voice actors of the anime series (which had great English dub work) on this series. So, for those who are fond of Brandon Swaile’s Light, Alessandro Juliani’s L, Brian Drummond’s Ryuk, Shannon Chan-Kent as Misa and the other English dub voice actors will be happy to know that they did the English dub for the live film. That surprised me and definitely major kudo points for Viz Media for keeping things consistent in the voice acting.

SPECIAL FEATURES:

Special features include a director’s interview and the trailer to the film. Plus there is a trailer for the anime series and “Viz Pictures presents”. The features are quite short but it was great to see an interview with director Shusuke Kaneko addressing the challenge the staff had to adapt the manga series to a live action film and what changes that had to be made.

I would have liked to see all features together as one featurette and a “play all” command but that’s a minor quirp but nevertheless, I’m just happy there are special features on the DVD.

I was extremely pleased with the live version of the film. I expected that there would be slight deviations from the original manga and anime series because there is only so much you can pack into a two hour movie.

But even with the slight changes, everything worked out. The pacing was well done, the CGI of Ryuk was well done. But those changes from the original series is what gives the film it’s own life.

Unlike the manga and anime series, Naomi Misora (Seto) has a slightly different role, as does Shiori Akino (Kashii) that plays a major pivotal role early in the series of how demented Light has become, even with a followup comment by Ryuk. Fantastic!

But the plus for this film was the talent involved. Tatsuya Fujiwara is such an impressive actor that it was great to see him take on the role of Light Yagami. To see Fujiwara’s acting show the believable and caring Light Yagami evolve into the killer known as Kira was just fantastic. Kenichi Matsuyama as L was also well done.

But of course, the addition of other talents such as Asaka Seto. She’s such a popular TV drama and film star that it was great to see her as the vengeful Naomi Misora and it’s great to see Mr. “Iron Chef” Takeshi Kaga as Soichiro Yagami.

I was extremely pleased with the first live action film and the treatment it has received on DVD. I enjoyed watching it in Japanese but watching it again with the voice actors of the original anime series. Again, I’m not fond with English dubbing for a lot of Asian films but VIZ was smart in utilizing the voice actors for the anime series on this live film. Well done!

I highly recommended this DVD! Fantastic!

here! TV,  America’s first gay, lesbian and transgender television network, features many film projects featuring up-and-coming talent.

And with the popularity of the James Bond and Jason Bourne films, I’m sure the question had been posed, “What if there was a spy-action thriller film featuring a gay character?”.

here! films decided to do just that with a George Schenck and Frank Cardea film, directed by Ron Oliver featuring the first gay spy thriller featuring Jacob Keane (played by “Queer as Folk” actor Robert Gant).

The film starts off in Berlin with three agents in a mission.  Jacob Keane (Grant), Marta (Shannen Doherty) and Jared (Fraser Brown) on an undercover mission that goes wrong.  From then on, everyone goes there separate ways.

Years later, Jacob is now a professional photographer taking photos of models and you find out that his working partner at the photo studio is his boyfriend and he is gay.

On that same day, it is Jacob’s weekend to take care of his daughter and the two have a specially planned weekend until he gets home and receives a message on his answering machine from Marta, who sounds disturbed and in trouble and needs to meet with him.

Jacob leaves his daughter with his former girlfriend or wife (who is shown to also be gay) and heads to the airport to find Marta and realizes that she is being followed.  Once he meets Marta, something is wrong because she doesn’t even recognize who she is.

Although Jacob and Marta have been out of the spy agency for years, someone wants them dead. The film becomes a cat and mouse chase as Jacob and Marta try to escape and outwit the thugs that are after them and try to find out why Marta lost her memory and who wants them dead.

“Kiss Me Deadly” is an action-packed spy thriller that delivers.  The storyline is engaging and Robert Gant definitely is convingly cast as a gay spy hero and does a great job as Jacob Keane.

After watching “Beverly Hills 90210″ actress Tori Spelling on here! films “Kiss the Bride”, I admit that I was surprised to find another 90210 an actress, Shannen Doherty, in another here! films project. It’s safe to say that Shannen Doherty’s reputation of a diva is quite well documented in the television industry but after watching her for years on television in a variety of roles, I wasn’t sure if I could picture her in a film that dealt with international espionage.  But she did a pretty good job playing the character of “Marta”.

The film also stars actor John Rhys-Davies who plays the character of Dale who once was part of the spy agency and a person who may have clues on why Marta has lost her memory.

I also found the scouting locations for this film, with the budget that the filmmakers had to work with well-thought out and planned.  Filmed in New Zealand, just with certain shots, the viewer definitely gets a feeling of Europe and overall, you get that good feel of international espionage because of the beautiful scenery of the lush greenery to the cool and hip areas where the film was shot.

AUDIO & VIDEO:

The film was shot in digital and featured in widescreen 16×9.  The audio selections are either digital 5.1 and 2.0.

SPECIAL FEATURES:

The bonus features included on this DVD features a director’s commentary by Ron Oliver.   For film students, these are the kind of commentary you like to hear because Oliver definitely goes into details from casting, to props, you name it.  Also, watching the film and having questions of certain scenes that he wishes he may or may have not used.   So, the commentary definitely is worth listening to.

The “Backlot” is a 24-minute featurette featuring interviews with the cast members and how they saw the film, how it was working with the other cast members and working with director Ron Oliver.  A really good behind-the-scenes look at the making of the film.

Special features also include the trailer for the film.

I was very entertained by this film.  As a big fan of spy-action thrillers, I was really impressed with the storyline.  There is a lot of action, it was well-acted and most of all, when it comes to this genre, you need a gripping storyline where the action continues from beginning to end.  “Kiss Me Deadly” delivers!

Robert Gant is definitely in a position to be the first gay spy agent Jacob Keane and I hope this film series continues because it definitely breaks new ground for a film that is a gay spy hero.  Again, I’m sure people wondered what if there was a gay version of James Bond or Jason Bourne and so, you have it with Jacob Keane.

As for Shannen Doherty, she did a pretty good job in this role.  And I really think that when Doherty is paired with a director that is able to work with her, especially on the delivery of some lines (which Doherty gave her ideas to Oliver and Oliver was cool enough to listen), she can deliver.

As for the film, with a good international spy thriller, along with the action, you have to have good locations.  And the film crew did a good job in capturing that European feel.   So, that was another plus that I found with the film.

Although I did enjoy the film, I did find some scenes rather unnecessary.  There was a scene where Jacob Keane needed to get rid of his cell phone and so he sees a young guy at the bar and they go to a bathroom stall to fool around and Jacob puts the cell phone in his coat pocket.   Now would an agent like Jacob Keane really have to go that far to get rid of a phone?

Another scene was at the bath house, I just felt that there were shots of naked men there just for the sake of having it in the film.  I didn’t object to the bath house, I just felt that certain scenes in the bath house went far too long in terms of pacing.

The other little quirk I had was with the agency.  The agency plays a big part in this film and whereas spy films such as a 007 film or a Jason Bourne film, you know that it exists and the director (played by Jonathan Colton) is trying to find out why the agency’s former operatives are either dead or in trouble.  You don’t get that sense of urgency and the agency, although not a big part in this film, you just see it lingering and makes you wonder, how powerful is this agency?   The director does show up in certain scenes especially an important part at the end of the film.  But definitely will expect to see more interaction with the agency and Jacob Keane in future films.

Frankly, I feel that Ron Oliver did a great job directing this film and George Schenck and Frank Cardea really wrote a pretty good script.  They really did a good job in crafting a film around a gay spy.  The character of Jacob Keane is a character that I hope to see again because there is a lot of potential in this character for future sequels.

Definitely a film worth watching!

I don’t think I have busted a gut watching a comedy series until watching “The Big Bang Theory”.  What a wonderful and hilarious series coming from the minds of Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady.

The series is about two physicists Leonard (Johnny Galecki) and Sheldon (Jim Parsons) who live in an apartment together.  One day, they get a new neighbor with Penny, a blonde and beautiful woman from Nebraska who has come to California for a better life but after a bad breakup, finds friendship with Leonard and his friends.

Joining Leonard and Sheldon are their two best friends Howard (Simon Helberg), a perverted and horny brainiac and Rajesh (Kunal Nayyar), another brainiac but has a problem with his inability to speak with beautiful girls.

What makes this comedy work so well are the character dynamics and each of their quirks.  Especially the character of Sheldon who is just the most anal geek among the three but Parson’s Sheldon just is incredible.  Included in this season 1 box set are a total of 17 episodes.

1. Pilot - Penny moves into the building and Leonard who is smitten by her agrees to get back her TV from her muscle-bound ex.
2. The Big Bran Hypothesis - Leonard is addicted to cleanliness and organization and can’t stand Penny’s messy room, so he sneaks into her room during the early morning to organize her room.
3. The Fuzzy Boots Corollary - Leonard has a date with Penny but she doesn’t know it’s a date.
4. The Luminous Fish Effect - Sheldon gets fired from work and decides to stay at home, concocting experiments and annoying everyone.
5. The Hamburger Postulate - Leonard’s not sure if he’ll ever become Penny’s boyfriend, so he and a fellow co-worker decide to have sex, while Sheldon doesn’t know what to do when his roommate is having sex in their apartment.
6. The Middle Earth Paradigm - Penny’s having a Halloween party and all the guys are invited including her ex who picks on Leonard.
7. The Dumpling Paradox - What happens when Howard gets lucky with Penny’s friend?
8. The Grasshopper Experiment - Rajesh finds a way to get over his inability to speak to a woman but what happens when his parents plan an arranged marriage and he has to meet with this woman.
9. The Cooper-Hofstadter Polarization - Leonard and Sheldon are invited to present their physics findings but instead leads to a fight between the two.
10. The Loobenfeld Decay - Sheldon can’t tell a lie, so he puts Leonard in a odd situation.

14. The Nerdvana Ahhihilation - What happens when Leonard orders a (very large) time machine from a film.

AUDIO AND VIDEO:

The audio is stereo and nothing major since the show is primarily all dialogue.  As for the video, the earlier episodes has a bit of graininess to it.  I thought maybe playing the disc on a Blu-ray player maybe showing a lot of noise but I checked the disc on another player and it seems that the first few episodes just had a bit of it.  But fortunately, not all of it are like that.  If anything, you see it moreso on the pilot.

SPECIAL FEATURES:

The DVD box set unfortunately doesn’t have too many special features.  Included is a featurette titled “Quantum Mechanics of The Big Bang Theory: A Behind-the-Scenes Look Into Geek Chic”.  The 20-minutes featurette features interviews with the creators Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady and also the cast.

What I found interesting about the featurette was learning how the show was created, how the actors were selected and the use of science in the show.

I’ve always wondered what would happen on television with a lot of the sitcoms now nearly all gone from television except on syndication.  But I have to admit that Monday nights on CBS has become my favorite night thanks to “The Big Bang Theory” and “How I Met Your Mother”.

I have to admit that “The Big Bang Theory” is just so enjoyable to me because of my enjoyment of super heroes, comic books,  technology, video games, science, etc.  Although these guys are more on the extremeness of geekiness, I can’t help but love the show.  It’s absolutely one of the best sitcoms right now and for a comedy series, I don’t think I have laughed so much since “Seinfeld”.

You can find this season 1 set for a great price and I definitely recommend this TV series!  Give it a try, you’ll love it!

“Kiss the Bride” is a sexy, fun, romantic comedy, proving the boundaries of love, sexually and identity and never constant.

One of the ambitious projects to come from the company is a film directed by C. Jay Cox and a romantic comedy written by Ty Lieberman and a romantic comedy starring Tori Spelling, Phillipp Karner and James O’Shea.

The film is about two high school friends Matt (Phillipp Karner) and Ryan (James O’Shea) who are young and in love.  Phillip moved to California for college to attend Stanford University and now works for Queery Magazine.

One day, Phillip receives an invitation from Ryan that he is marrying Alex.  For Phillip, he is shocked to find out that Alex is a woman (played by Tori Spelling) and immediately prepares for his trip back to his hometown and find out how and why Ryan is marrying a woman.

Phillip has his problems with his own personal relationships and has not had a long relationship since he tends to compare them with his first love (Ryan).

So, when Phillip returns home, he realizes that Ryan is pretty much in love with Alex but has a problem with the two getting married and possibly maybe convince Ryan that maybe the two of them can rekindle their old high school romance.

Of course, the many “wedding cliche” films about the knight in shining armor preventing the woman he loves from getting married to another guy, is what people may think that “Kiss the Bride” is pretty much all about.  But in this case, the Knight in Shining Armor saving the groom.  But the film does have its surprise ending and avoiding the cliche.

AUDIO & VIDEO:

The film was shot in digital and featured in widescreen 16×9.  The audio selections are either digital 5.1 and 2.0.  Cox does talk about the challenges of shooting the film on the production commentary included in the special features but all in all, the digital video is crisp and vibrant.

SPECIAL FEATURES:

The bonus features included on this DVD includes commentary by C. Jay Cox with actors Philipp Karner and James O’Shea.  Really good insight on the film production and the various talent on the film.  So, a pretty good commentary.

There are a good number of deleted scenes but there was one scene featuring Alex’s mother (played by Joanna Cassidy) talking with Matt in regards to marriage and why do people find marriage so important.  In the film, Alex’s mother can be seen a bit touchy but the part cut out about her discussing marriage and how things weren’t the same for her after she had a hysterectomy (removing of a woman’s womb) was an interesting part of the film but was cut out because the generator gave out and the lighting started to become uneven.  This is probably one deleted scene that I wish was included on the film.  But at the same time, for those who didn’t like the seriousness of the film, I can understand them agreeing that it should have been cut.

Then there is a 30-minute or so featurette of the film featuring a lot of behind-the-scenes footage of the making of the film.

Also included is a trailer and photo gallery.

Overall, the film was actually quite fun.  It was lighthearted and the film has been called a gay version of “My Best Friend’s Wedding”. Of course, the film starts off with humor, it does get a bit serious as it progresses.

I did find the storyline quite interesting as Alex finally discovers that her fiance Ryan has had a relationship with Ryan.  But moreso, how her character is just in love with her fiance and gives him one more chance to test his love for her by having a passionate moment with Matt.  And how it resolves itself at the end of the film.  Definitely not what I was expecting but at the same time, glad that old film cliche’s are ignored and that Cox and Lieberman try something different for the ending.

As for the acting, I felt that both Philipp Karner and James O’Shea showed character in their roles.  Tori Spelling who was several months pregnant in the film was actually fun and bubbly and you also get a cameo buy her husband Dean McDermott.

And for the film’s R-rating, there is quite a bit of sexual content and nudity for those who want to see Karner and O’Shea in the buff.

All in all, the film was fun, “Kiss the Bride” is a romantic comedy that definitely touches on a lot of topics of boundaries of love and identity but most of all, in the end…it’s a love story with a happy ending.

Suit up for Action with Robert Downey Jr. in the ultimate adventure movie you’ve been waiting for, Iron Man!  When jet-setting genius-industrialist Tony Stark is captured in enemy territory, he builds a high-tech suit of armor to escape.  Now, he’s on a mission to save the world as a hero who’s built, not born, to be unlike any other.  Co-starring Gwynneth Paltrow, Terrence Howard and Jeff Bridges, it’s a fantastic, high-flying journey that is “hugely entertaining” (Joe Morgenstern, The Wall Street Journal).

I’ve been a big fan of the Iron Man comic book series for such a long time and from the “Tales of Suspense” comic books, as a young child, I would always be into the “Avengers” and even be this happy child with his “Secret Wars” Iron Man toy.

Years before “IRON MAN” became a movie, I’ve always pictured Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man.  He had the look and even back then with Downey Jr.’s personal life, there is some instances that mirror Tony Stark’s challenges in the comic books.  So, suffice to say that I was quite happy with him being cast for the film.

As for the the film, I had no doubt in my mind that “IRON MAN” would be a blockbuster hit in the Summer but I purposely waited for it to come out on DVD, so I can watch it on my own personal home theater and watch it with no distractions.

This film focuses on Tony Stark, the millionaire who runs Stark Industries which creates weapons for the military but while on a meeting to the Middle East, Stark’s military escort are gun down and eventually the suave millionaire gets caught in a blast (from weapons created by his company), next thing you know, Stark is being operated on and being held by prisoner by terrorists.

While under captivity, Stark creates his first Iron Man uniform and uses it to escape his captors.  Upon returning back to America, Stark’s perspective of the world and his company has changed.  Also, his goal to develop a more technologically advanced mobile suit armor becomes his obsession and leads him to take on the terrorist who have been using his companies weapons for evil but most of all prepare for the lies and deceptions that await him.

AUDIO & VIDEO:

The version that I am reviewing is the regular widescreen DVD, not the awesome Blu-ray version packed with a lot of extras.  But the audio for this version is Dolby Digital 5.1 and video is widescreen enhanced for 16:9 TV’s.

SPECIAL FEATURES:

This “IRON MAN” DVD version features deleted and extended scenes.   Deleted scenes that I’m glad the director chose to eliminate from the final cut of the film.

There are three versions of this release on DVD/Blu-Ray.  This version is the single disc version, the double disc version features many featurettes including a 108-minute documentary, a six part documentary and more.  The Blu-ray version has received almost perfect stars for its amount of content and BD-Live.  So, if you have a Blu-ray player, the Blu-ray version of “IRON MAN” is what is recommended.

After watching it, I definitely enjoyed the film but like any superhero film, as the first film always focuses on the origin, this series will be judged on its continuing storylines.  Similar to like the “X-Men”, “Spider-Man” and the “Fantastic Four” films, there is always the “origin” that not many people are too enthusiastic about and want to see more battles.

Fortunately, “Iron Man”did offer quite a bit of kick as battles but I loved the scene where Iron Man just rescues a village being terrorized by the enemies.

Again, Robert Downey Jr. did a great job as Tony Star, Jeff Bridges as Obidiah Stane was pretty good.  As for Terrence Howard’s James Rhodes… it was OK but I was expecting more of a no-nonsense Rhodes.  But with Don Cheadle replacing Howard for the next film, I hope that Cheadle can bring the attitude especially if he’s going to be War Machine.

But definitely enjoyed this film.  With “IRON MAN”, unlike any other top tier Marvel superheroes, Robert Downey Jr. has a lot of inner demons to contend with and is such a complex character.  For the comic series, the alcoholism consumed him and I’m curious to see if it happens in the films.   It will definitely be interesting to see how his character is explored and what new Iron Man outfit we will see him sporting next Silver Centurion Iron Man?  Maybe even see some Hulkbuster or Thorbuster?  Who knows.  And of course, there is James Rhodes as War Machine and I look forward in seeing that character come to play in the films.

But all in all, “IRON MAN” was an enjoyable film for the first version.  A lot of action, special effects but definitely would like to see where they go with the characters in the next upcoming film.

All in all, a very cool movie and enjoyed it so much, now I’m going to have to pick up the Blu-ray ultimate edition next!

Special Agent Caleb Smith (Jason Priestley) is a man on a mission.  When military time-travel technology is stolen by a rogue scientist Dr. Daniel Winter (Lou Diamond Phillips).  Agent Smith leads an all-out government manhunt to get it back.  Winter is determined not to let this all-powerful weapon fall back into the hands of the military.  When Smith finally tracks down his target, he must risk everything - including his family - in order to stop the weapon from being unleashed on the world.  Planes vanish, time distorts and the very existence of mankind hangs in the balance in this action-packed adventure!

To be released on November 4th is a sci-fi time travel film starring Golden Globe nominee Jason Priestley (”Beverly Hills 90210″) and Lou Diamond Phillips (”La Bamba” and “Stand and Deliver”) featured in an action-driven storyline about a rogue scientist, Dr. Daniel Winter (Phillips) who has disappeared with a classified time-travel device and hides it in an airliner in which special agent Caleb Smith’s (Priestley) family is on.

As Caleb and his family prepare to go on a family vacation, Caleb is called on an emergency to apprehend Dr. Winter (not knowing that Winter boarded the plane that he was just on).  Winter must be found at all cost or their will be repercussions due to a potential time shift which can destroy the Earth and also the galaxy. But Caleb realizes that Dr. Winter has been planning to be on the same plane as his family all along and thus Caleb does what he can to protect his family.

But the situation goes awry when the President of the United States doesn’t want to risk the lives of millions of Americans and is willing to destroy the airliner carrying dozens of Americans.  Thus, two fighter jets are sent in to destroy the airliner.

As Caleb pleads with the agency to have the jets back off, the jets fire their missiles.  But a second before impact, Dr. Winter activates the  transporter.  With Caleb feeling that his family is dead, he goes to the wreckage site but is shocked to find out that the plane wreckage was found the day before.  He’s confused since the flight just left hours ago and realizes that there is more to the story than his agency wants to tell him.  But learns that his family may still be alive but not in the present but somewhere near this vortex that has suddenly emerged on top of the planet.

With only two remote devices able to control the transportation device, one is kept with Winter and another is somewhere.  While Caleb looks for the second controller, unbeknown to him is that there are people in his own agency working against him and want to use the device for their own personal agenda.

The race begins to find the controller before his enemies do or else, the growing vortex will continue to kill people but also possibly absorb the whole planet and possibly the galaxy.

Will Caleb be able to save his wife and daughter and the passengers of the airline from destruction?  Will he be able to find the controller in time?

“Termination Point” has an interesting concept in regards to transportation and time travel.  As Dr. Winter uses lab rats as tests to transport the animals from point A to point B, he has never used the device on something as large as an airliner.

The science fiction aspect comes in the fact that when Winter uses the device, the airliner and those that are alive somehow stay inside this vortex of space where they are about to get sucked up and die.  And somehow, they are taken back in time.

Although you have the sci-fi aspect of the film with Dr. Winter and the people stuck on the airliner inside a space in time, you get this other storyline in a “24″ type of storyline with agent Caleb Smith and a few people in the agency that he trust and together working against the clock to find the second controller and save the world.

The film does have it’s flaws. Somehow there are just some scenes that somewhat damper the naturalness of the film.   Jason Priestley convincingly does a good job as a special agent and Lou Diamond Phillips does a good job as a scientist but you get some editing that just seems out of place at times.  But the problematic situations in the film are more of the scenes that focus on the airliner, the jets, the vortex as it shoots out electricity destroying buildings and zapping people.

For one, there’s only so much CG can do, especially depending on whatever budget there was for the film.  The CG or actual models of the airliner, military planes and the vortex zapping up buildings really look like model toys.   The vortex was a nice sci-fi spin but when the film overly uses images of the plane and jets flying, it looks so unnatural because they look like toys.

When the vortex zaps the buildings, you would expect to see rocks and rubble but of course, with what they were able to do for this film was to create the rubble via CG and it looks more like polygons flying out than rubble.

SPECIAL FEATURES:

“Termination Point: Behind the Scenes” featurette includes interviews with both Jason Priestley, Lou Diamond Phillips and co-stars and the director Jason Bourque.  You learn a bit about why these two took the role and how they have a long time friendship for over 15 years.

All in all, “Termination Point” was a fun film and it was definitely interesting to see Jason Priestley as a special agent and convincingly does a good job as a Jack-Bauer-ish type of character.  The same with Phillips as the brainiac scientist.

Personally, because of the 24-ish style of storyline, I can almost imagine this being a TV series that would probably have been awesome if it had a longer storyline and of course, fleshing out the character development of the people that Caleb works with and also, the people who are working in the agency but are traitors and learning their motivations.

But as a film, all-in-all, it has an interesting plot and an interesting sci-fi and dramatic feel to it and of course, it is packed with action.  Again, it has its share of problems which I mentioned above.  But at the same time, I believe that the performances of Priestley and Phillips really helped this film out.  So, if you enjoy a TV series like “24″ with a touch of science fiction, then definitely give “Termination Point” a try.

Spider-Man, X-Men and the Fantastic Four will never be the same after this outrageously funny spoof of your favorite comic book movies!  Drake Bell (Drake & Josh) stars as a nerdy high school student bitten by a genetically-altered dragonfly.  He stumbles hilariously through the process of becoming a crime-fighter and as his new powers grow, so do the laughs.  Sara Paxton (Aquamarine) and Christopher McDonald (Spy Kids 2) costar as the clueless damsel in distress and the comically intense super villain, along with Pamela Anderson and Leslie Nielsen.  Going from superzero to superhero has never been this much fun!

For the week of Halloween 2008, I decided that there will be no horror movie marathon.  This week, I will watch the various comedy films that typically feature on the front of the DVD “from the guys who brought you SCARY MOVIE and the NAKED GUN”.

I pretty much know what I’m getting into with these films and know you have to have an open mind because although many scenes will have its funny moments, you can expect your share of really idiotic moments as well.

I know people who can just laugh and know what to expect with these films but some who have never seen these type of films and just feel the wasted their time watching it.  So, with that being said, enjoyment of this film depends on your take of these type of movies.

“SUPERHERO MOVIE” is a film that parodies the first “Spider-Man” film, “Fantastic Four”, “X-Men” and “Batman”.

The film revolves around Rick Riker, a nerdy high school teenager who loves his classmate but bullied quite a bit in his school.  Things go from bad at worse at a school trip when he accidentally spills a chemical which attracts animals to him and somehow he ends up being bit by a radioactive dragonfly.

Riker develops special powers and next thing you know, the Dragonfly is born.

Marion Ross and Leslie Nielsen play the aunt and uncle of Rick Riker.  In true Leslie Nielsen fashion, if you watched the “Naked Gun” films, you know what to expect for his role.  Marion Ross of “Happy Days” fame was quite interesting as the aunt who has a major flatulence problem and just can’t stop farting.

Tracy Morgan plays a Professor X type of role, trying to help Riker learn his new powers and show him the school of teens who have powers.  Pamela Anderson plays the role of Invisible Woman who has been caught messing around with Professor X by Mrs. Professor X.

One of the highlight scenes is when Riker and the girl of his dreams, Jill Johnson are about to share a kiss but his aunt Lucille (Marion Ross) sleeping right next to them leashes continuous farts that just sound so horrible.  Fart jokes can be funny and the manage to include a hilarious gassy scenes in which Jill who really wants to kiss Riker, uses her tampons to put up her nose to avoid smelling the fart. Fart jokes are gross but when done well, you can’t hep but laugh.

Of course, probably the coldest jokes are the ones on physicist Stephen Hawking.  The gags on his character featured getting his head accidentally stuck in a beehive and not able to get out of it because of his disability.  And of course, using his vocoder device to simulate Hawking screaming profanities. For a film to really make fun of his disability to get some cheap laughs is just very cold.

There are so many gags in this film with those type of gags, some quite funny and some that are just idiotic but I found this film more to the funny side fortunately.  But with jokes such as the Stephen Hawking (which there are numerous scenes with this character), I can see many finding it tasteless and some to find it so funny knowing it’s so wrong.

Truthfully, I wasn’t paying too much attention towards the quality of the film and as for the audio, the film is strictly dialogue.  Not much need for special audio effects.

SPECIAL FEATURES:

The extended version features the alternate ending, deleted scenes, two featurettes and a theatrical trailer plus a commentary.  The regular version only features the alternate ending (which was so dumb, I’m glad they didn’t use it), deleted scenes and the theatrical trailer.

There are three versions of this film on DVD in the US.  The regular version which is only 74 minutes long and has only the alternate ending, deleted scenes and theatrical trailer, while the extended version which is 82 minutes long and has the additional commentary track and featurettes.  The third version is a Blockbuster exclusive which features additional deleted scenes.

So, far of the movies within this genre and created by the same creators of “SCARY MOVIE” and “NAKED GUN”, of the more recent films, “SUPERHERO MOVIE” was probably the funniest compared to the others. Again, this is comparing to the other related films by the same creators.

There is a lot of funny jokes throughout the film but there are also a good number of idiotic jokes as well.

I enjoyed the superhero film parodies on this film and although there are a few well-known talent who made cameos on this film, I’m just glad many of their segments were quite short.  In fact, I’m glad that the film was quite short.

In the end, I definitely didn’t find myself disliking it.  I suppose it’s because I enjoyed the superhero parodies on the film and I haven’t seen a film go so far to do a parody based on superhero films in this magnitude.

All in all, a fun film if you come watching with an open mind.
