[DVD News] Deal of the Week: Gamestop Buy 2, get 4 DVD’s free!

Hi everyone,

For anime or DVD (and I think even Blu-Ray/HD collectors), the current promotion for Gamestop is buy 2, get 3 DVD’s for free.

I was told that Gamestop is liquidating their DVD’s and will now have a Buy 2, Get 4 DVD’s for free sale starting on July 1st.

A lot of the anime are used (and I’ve learned they have some of used ones as new in the back, so you may want to ask the manager or employee).  But still, you can get DVD boxsets and other DVD’s pretty cheap with this sale!

Have fun!

[DVD] MY KID COULD PAINT THAT

She’s four years old. Her paintings sell for $25,000.

Inspiration or manipulation? You decide.

MY KID COULD PAINT THAT

Debuts on DVD on March 4, 2008

Culver City, CA (January 7, 2008) – An Official Selection of both the 2007 Toronto Film Festival and the 2007 Sundance Film Festival, My Kid Could Paint That documents the rise and fall of four-year old artist Marla Olmstead. Directed by Amir Bar-Lev, this Sony Pictures Classics Film will be released on DVD from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment on March 4 for an SRP of $24.96.

According to her parents, Mark and Laura Olmstead, Marla began painting when she was only two. By the time she was four, her work had been exhibited at a gallery and she was profiled in The New York Times. But rumors that her father might be doing the paintings and crediting Marla led to a backlash against the family and, in order to clear their name, the Olmsteads invited filmmaker Amir Bar-Lev to document Marla’s technique over the course of a year. But, after spending countless hours with the Olmsteads, Bar-Lev finds himself unable to vouch for Marla’s talent.

Synopsis

In this thought-provoking documentary, Director Amir-Bar-Lev tracks the overnight celebrity of little Marla Olmstead, a toddler who creates gallery-worthy paintings on the dining room table of her family home. A media sensation by the age of four, critics compare her work with Jackson Pollock’s. Sales of her paintings reach $300,000. But, sadly, the bubble bursts. When a 2005 profile by “60 Minutes” suggests that Marla had help making her paintings, the finger is pointed at her father, an amateur artist and night manager at Frito Lay. Almost overnight, her family is ensnared in a web of accusation and denial – with the burden of proof placed squarely in their lap: Is Marla a child prodigy or an innocent victim of a hoax?

DVD BONUS FEATURES INCLUDE:

  • “Back to Binghamton” – a mini-doc with Director Amir Bar-Lev that includes follow-up interviews, Sundance Q & A, Binghamton Q & A, deleted scenes, etc.
  • “Kimmelman on Art” – a mini-doc with the New York Times art critic
  • Audio Commentary

My Kid Could Paint That was directed by Amir Bar-Lev. Laura, Mark and Marla Olmstead participated in this documentary about their lives.

[DVD NEWS] Warner Bros. Entertainment to Release its High-Definition DVD Titles Exclusively in the Blu-Ray Disc Format Beginning Later This Year

January 04, 2008

In response to consumer demand, Warner Bros. Entertainment will release its high-definition DVD titles exclusively in the Blu-ray disc format beginning later this year, it was announced today by Barry Meyer, Chairman & CEO, Warner Bros. and Kevin Tsujihara, President, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Group.

“Warner Bros.’ move to exclusively release in the Blu-ray disc format is a strategic decision focused on the long term and the most direct way to give consumers what they want,” said Meyer. “The window of opportunity for high-definition DVD could be missed if format confusion continues to linger. We believe that exclusively distributing in Blu-ray will further the potential for mass market success and ultimately benefit retailers, producers, and most importantly, consumers.”

Warner Home Video will continue to release its titles in standard DVD format and Blu-ray. After a short window following their standard DVD and Blu-ray releases, all new titles will continue to be released in HD DVD until the end of May 2008.

“Warner Bros. has produced in both high-definition formats in an effort to provide consumer choice, foster mainstream adoption and drive down hardware prices,” said Jeff Bewkes, President and Chief Executive Officer, Time Warner Inc., the parent company of Warner Bros. Entertainment. “Today’s decision by Warner Bros. to distribute in a single format comes at the right time and is the best decision both for consumers and Time Warner.”

“A two-format landscape has led to consumer confusion and indifference toward high definition, which has kept the technology from reaching mass adoption and becoming the important revenue stream that it can be for the industry,” said Tsujihara. “Consumers have clearly chosen Blu-ray, and we believe that recognizing this preference is the right step in making this great home entertainment experience accessible to the widest possible audience. Warner Bros. has worked very closely with the Toshiba Corporation in promoting high definition media and we have enormous respect for their efforts. We look forward to working with them on other projects in the future.”
