Basil Rathbone as Sherlock Holmes (1930’s - 1940’s)?

December 28, 2008 by J!-ENT · Leave a Comment

The following photo of actor Basil Rathbone is from one of his Sherlock Holmes films. Rathbone played Sherlock Holmes in 14 films from 1939 through 1946 and is known for his work on “Sherlock Holmes”.

The following photo that I have is the following. Not too sure what year or what film it’s from but a cool photo of Rathbone. If anyone knows what film this is from or what year, please let me know. Thanks!

Clark Gable (1938) - Test Pilot

December 15, 2008 by J!-ENT · Leave a Comment

Among the photos I own of Clark Gable, my favorite is this 1938 photo (I’m guessing a publicity shot) for his 1938 film “TEST PILOT” starring him, Spencer Tracy and Myrna Loy.  I just like the overall shot.

Ahhh….Clark Gable aka “The King of Hollywood”.  I own few photos of Clark Gable but the following is a photo I have of Clark Gable in Western garb.  I’m not too sure if it’s from his 1952 film “Lone Star” but  if anyone happens to know which film this is from or any details of the photo.  Please let me know.

December 6, 2008 by Dennis Amith · Leave a Comment

One of the 8×11 photos of Gary Cooper that I own is a press publicity photo from his 1952 film “HIGH NOON” via United Artists.  Not sure what the number identification was on the bottom right.

December 6, 2008 by Dennis Amith · 1 Comment

This is one of the 8×11 photos I have of Joan Crawford that I currently own.

Joan Crawford is an Academy Award Winning Actress and an actress that was selected as the “Greatest Actress of All Time” by the American Film Institute.

I am not too sure what year the photo was taken and checked online but haven’t found anything. If anyone knows, please let me know.  Or any information pertaining to this photo.  Thank you!

Charlie Chaplin (1915-1919?)

November 25, 2008 by J!-ENT · Leave a Comment

I own very few Charlie Chaplin photos but this one, this one has been hard in placing.  One person told me it may be a 1919 film titled “Sunnyside”, another says it may be from the 1915 film “The Tramp” but perhaps I may need to track these films on DVD to find out.

If anyone happens to know what film this photo is from, please let me know.  Thanks!

You’re Darn Tootin’ (1928)

November 25, 2008 by J!-ENT · Leave a Comment

I own a good number of 8×11 Laurel and Hardy photos but one of the residents at the local library was always there to help me with questions when it came to films that he grew up with and immediately knew that this was from 1928 and a silent film from MGM titled “You’re Darn Tootin’”.

The 20-minute film featured Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy as they lose their jobs in the band and become street performers.

It’s one of my favorite promotional photos of Laurel & Hardy for a film.

The Public Enemy (1931)

November 16, 2008 by Dennis Amith · Leave a Comment

Another photo that I have in my collection.  This still is from the controversial scene of the 1931 film “Public Enemy” in wich James Cagney smashes a grapefruit on his girlfriend’s (Mae Clark). The film has been voted in American Film Institute’s top ten films of all time and regarded by many as the top gangster film of all time.

According to Wikipedia:

In an interview given in 1978, also featured in the Turner Classic Movies documentary “The Men Who Made The Movies: William Wellman”, director William A. Wellman stated that he added the grapefruit “hitting” to the scene, because when he and his wife at the time would get into fights, she would never talk or give any expression. Since she always had a grapefruit for breakfast, he always wanted to put the grapefruit into her face just to get a reaction out of her, so she would show some emotion; he felt that this scene gave him the opportunity to rid himself of that temptation.

Marilyn Monroe, Lauren Bacall and Betty Grable promotional photo for “How to Marry a Millionaire”

November 9, 2008 by J!-ENT · Leave a Comment

A photo from the popular 1953 hit film “How to Marry a Millionaire” starring Marilyn Monroe, Lauren Bacall and Betty Grable.

The film is about three women who rent a luxurious penthouse (and pretend to be rich) in order to find rich men to marry unknowingly that there are men who are in the area who are also pretending to be rich as well.  For film buffs, “How to Marry a Millionaire” was the first film photographed in CinemaScope Widescreen process (but the second to be released).

The promotional 11×8.5 photo from what I found online is quite common among collectors.

Little Rascals with Bing Crosby (1936)

November 7, 2008 by Dennis Amith · 2 Comments

Here is another classic photo that I have.  When I was young, I grew up watching the Little Rascals (Our Gang) and this is among the few Little Rascals 8×11 photos that I do own.  This one features Afalfa, Spanky, Buckwheat and Darla.  A friend told me the teen on the top left is Edith Fellows and they are singing with the popular crooner, Bing Crosby.

I looked online and information does not feature too much on Edith Fellows during her Little Rascals years but judging by the age of Spanky and Darla, I am thinking this photo is from 1931.

I don’t ever recall an episode with Bing Crosby on the show.  Nor do I recall Edith Fellows (I have the DVD’s and VHS tapes of the shows but none appear on an episode). So, not sure if this was from a film.

If anyone has any information, please let me know!
