DVD REVIEW:
Last year, I recall watching a movie called “True Love” which was dubbed as a romantic comedy. The movie starred Sam Lee and with he as the main character, you knew you were in for a good ride. That is until the final five minutes of the movie which left you feeling devastated once the movie was over.
“Juliet in Love” is another movie that has been dubbed a romantic comedy and you enjoy the story and when you get to the ending… Well, that’s up for you to interpret.
Like “True Love”, the characters face problems from their past and current lives and you would hope that with the two of them together, they will be able to overcome anything in their way. Similar to “True Love”, until you get to the end.
I’ll just leave it at that.
Francis Ng and Sandra Ng do a great job in this movie. You also have Wilson Yip directing and Joe Ma producing, you know that you have talented people working on this film.
Although people see this as a breakthrough for Francis Ng outside of the typical triad/bad guy characters he plays, I find his February 2001 movie “Bakery Amour”, as his breakthrough character outside of the dysfunctional character he tends to play in movies.
Again, this movie is good and there are good people behind it. It’s that people who see romantic comedy’s are expecting an ending that they can be satisfied or accept. Although this movie didn’t leave me feeling devastated or pissed off, it did leave me feeling that this movie had so much potential and I was enjoying it and I felt that I was let down.
You will also find an interesting way that a product can be promoted on a movie. Whether you call it intrusive or clever is up to the viewer. But if you watch this movie a few times, count how many times you see the logo of the product and how many times the product is mentioned.
The DVD features trailers and the typical Mei Ah DVD offerings of a synopsis and cast info. DVD dialogue is good, the transfer was not colorful as I would expect from a recent movie but I tend to nitpick.
A movie that Wilson Yip, Francis Ng and Sandra Ng fans will enjoy but for those who are wanting a romantic comedy movie, perhaps this movie may not be for you. The movie does have its ups and downs. It does have violence but again, the movie is good but how you interpret the ending will decide if you think this movie is very good or disappointing.
