[ANIME] Summer exhibits for anime and manga

July 19, 2008 by KNDY

In a recent article by Matsumaru Kumi for the Daily Yomiuri, Matsumaru wrote, “With the summer vacation season nearing, events have been organized for children and adults alike in the fields of manga and animation. Besides exhibitions of original manga drawings or anime cels–which are becoming rare items in this digital era–visitors to these events can enjoy famed animation films or examine manga newly created for the occasions. Small visitors may also find it fun to take home manga-related souvenirs, including some available exclusively at the venues.”

“Tokyo’s Suginami and Nerima wards are home to many animation production companies. The Suginami Animation Museum is currently holding an exhibition to mark the 30th anniversary of the adaptation of the manga Galaxy Express 999 into an animated TV program.”

“The exhibition of original drawings, scripts and other items amounts to a tour of the world of Galaxy Express 999, which comprised 113 regular episodes and three TV specials, as well as three films.”

“You can see that Tetsuro, the boy protagonist, looks different in the film and TV shows, for example,” said Teru Fujita, who is in charge of the operation of the museum, which traces the overall history of manga and animation since 1917 in its permanent exhibits. “While fathers may be attracted to the old Galaxy Express 999 anime along with the theme song by rock group Godiego, their children may be fascinated with the film version or the diorama of Tetsuro and his beautiful and mysterious companion, Maetel.”
