With the sudden passing of Michael Jackson last week, millions of people around the world are paying their respects to the King of Pop, yet the circumstances surrounding his death remain a mystery and raise even more questions about his life. CBS News will take a look at both his legacy and the investigation into his death as part of the 48 HOURS special MICHAEL JACKSON: PICKING UP THE PIECES, anchored by Katie Couric on Tuesday, June 30 (10:00-11:00 pm, ET/PT).

With the probe under way, many are awaiting answers as to just what happened when Jackson collapsed, amid speculation about his use of prescription pain killers. The broadcast will take a look at Dr. Conrad Murray, the physician who reportedly found Jackson not breathing, shortly before the singer’s death.

While Jackson’s music has brought joy to so many, his life was riddled with controversy. MICHAEL JACKSON: PICKING UP THE PIECES will step back and look at the man whose strained relationship with his family, poor body image and plastic surgery eventually eclipsed his talent.  The broadcast will examine Jackson’s connection to the black community during his career as well as his legacy among musicians today and into the future.

In creating a pop-music dynasty, Jackson amassed a fortune, one that provided him a life of excess, eventually plunging him into debt. In the wake of his death, Jackson leaves behind an estate in financial upheaval, which will likely take years to untangle. And the fate of Jackson’s three children is also uncertain. MICHAEL JACKSON: PICKING UP THE PIECES will examine what lies ahead both financially and emotionally for those closest to him.

Despite all the questions that remain about who Michael Jackson really was, one thing is clear – his talent knew no boundaries and there has been no shortage of remembrances of his life and music. MICHAEL JACKSON: PICKING UP THE PIECES will include the latest tributes – big and small – across the globe, including the memorable performances at the BET Awards, the more intimate gatherings of his fans and the memorial service taking place at the famed Apollo Theater.

Japanese R&B group COLOR changing their name to DEEP

As with the case of changes among the EXILE Japanese music family, the group COLOR has gone through another major change but this time with a name change.

The group will now be known as DEEP.  The R&B quartet unveiled their new name as their concert performance at Zepp Tokyo on June 30th and revealed to their fans of the new name change.

COLOR was originally formed by EXILE’s ATSUSHI when the members of EXILE were pursuing individual projects but when EXILE grew in popularity, ATSUSHI left the group (with a few other members) but still remained as producer leaving Taka, Yuichiro, Keisei and Ryo as the main members of the group.

When EXILE made their their announcement in March to merge both EXILE and J Soul Brothers as one group, that same month, COLOR leader TAKA requested a name change in which ATSUSHI gave his blessing.  TAKA explained that when there is a deeper love and dream, especially for a happiness tied to a group name, there is a deeper bond between the group and their fans.

DEEP’s first CD single will be released on July 1st and is titled “ENDLESS ROAD”.

 

Katrina Halili wants other charged for sex video scandal

The celebrity sex scandal continues to heat up in the Philippines as Filipino star Katrina Halili wants three more people charged for a sex video in which her former boyfriend Dr. Hayden Kho is alleged to have video taped the couple without consent (and his friend reportedly posted the videos on the Internet).

According to the Inquire.net:

In her reply-affidavit, Halili said the counter-affidavits of Erik Johnston Chua, Dr. Herbert “Bistek” Rosario and Princess Marie Velasco showed they were aware of the existence of the sex video but they conspired with Belo to keep it.

“Despite knowledge of the said sex video between Hayden and complainant, they did not report its commission to complainant and instead they concealed and destroyed the sex videos as admitted by them,” Halili said.

“In fact, in an effort to permanently hide the criminal offense committed by respondent Hayden against complainant Halili, whose sex video was taken without her knowledge and consent, Dra. Belo instructed Erik Chua to burn her a copy of all the sex videos and to delete all the sex videos found at the laptop taken from Hayden,” Halili said.

Jane Fonda blogs about her memories of Michael Jackson

Jane Fonda recently blogged about her memories of Michael Jackson on her website.

The actress wrote, “But I remember one day he was visiting me at my ranch north of Santa Barbara. It was the first time he had been in that region but he must have liked it because later he bought his ranch in that same area. Anyway, as we walked around the ranch which was perched right at the edge of the mountain overlooking Goleta, I pointed to a spot where I told him I wanted to be buried. Michael had a melt down right then and there when he heard this. He shrieked and bent over and said “no, no, no!” “ What’s the matter,” I asked. “Don’t ever talk about your dying,” he answered. ‘Don’t ever think about it.’”

Fonda went on to write, “Massive heart attacks that you don’t recover from are quick. You don’t know what hit you. That’s probably the kindest death for Michael. It’s hard to imagine him being happy as he aged. One more demon to try and evade. I like to think he’s happy now, free of his demons. Free and floating and knowing how his art continues to be revered and celebrated by all of us all over the world. It will continue.”

Anna Kournikova involved in shoving match

People Magazine has reported that tennis star Anna Kournikova was involved in an altercation at the Lavo Nightclub in Las Vegas on Saturday night.  According to reports, a drunken woman grabbed Kournikova’s neck and shoved her into a wall. In an excerpt from the article:

“The woman came back over and threw a drink on Anna and her assistant,” the source said. “The woman was definitely drunk.”

“Anna said she wanted the woman kicked out, but then everything started to escalate and she and the woman started shoving and pushing each other,” the source said.

Kournikova is engaged to singer Enrique Eglesias.

BRAVO CELEBRATES HIGHEST RATED 2ND QUARTER EVER AMONG A18-49 AND TOTAL VIEWERS

Network Marks Unprecedented 15th Consecutive Quarter
Of Year-Over-Year Growth

NEW YORK – June 30, 2009 – Celebrating the network’s 15th consecutive quarter of year-over-year growth, Bravo again broke ratings records, marking its highest rated second quarter ever among adults 18-49 and total viewers in primetime, according to Nielsen Media Research. Bravo achieved its second quarter ratings success with the wildly successful freshman series “The Real Housewives of New Jersey,” the “Top Chef” spin-off hit “Top Chef Masters,” “NYC Prep” and “The Fashion Show,” along with returning favorites “The Real Housewives of New York City,” “Make Me a Supermodel” and the multiple Emmy award-winning “Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-List.”

With its youngest skewing second quarter ever, the network continued to attract the most upscale (household income $125K+) viewers among adults 18-49 while averaging 445,000 in the demo and 724,000 total viewers. Bravo also earned its highest rated June in network history among adults 18-49 (505,000) and total viewers (803,000) and currently ranks No. 19 on the dial among all ad supported cable entertainment networks.

Bravo Digital turned in its best second quarter ever, marking an impressive 99 percent increase in video hits, 29 percent increase in unique visitors and a 20 percent increase in page views versus 2Q08. Total video streams marked an all-time high with 12.72 million (vs. 6.54 million), garnered 3.81 million average monthly uniques (vs. 2.95 million) and 324 million total page views for the quarter (vs. 273 million in 2Q08).

BravoTV.com also earned remarkable numbers, with 174 million total page views, 2.53 million average monthly uniques and 12.33 million total video streams. TelevisionWithoutPity.com posted increases vs. 2Q08, with 150 million total page views, and double digit percentage gains in uniques (up 26 percent to 1.36 million average monthly uniques).

Bravo’s original programming continues to make headlines as “The Real Housewives of New Jersey” became the most watched ‘Housewives’ franchise to date, averaging 2.48 million total viewers and 1.84 million adults that culminated with the explosive record setting finale (4.6 million cumed total viewers and 3.25 million cumed adults 18-49). The series premiere of “NYC Prep” delivered 815,000 adults 18-49 and 1.23 million total viewers, and through two episodes, “Top Chef Masters” is averaging 963,000 adults 18-49 and 1.47 million total viewers.
