[CHINA] Actress Xu Jinglei creates handwritten font

Actress Xu Jinglei has been in the news quite a bit for creating her own online magazine but now she is also known for creating her own fonts.

According to CRIEnglish.com, “She spent two months handwriting more than 6,700 Chinese characters for the font, while the China Founder Group digitalized the characters and developed the software package.”

“People can transform ordinary computer font into Xu Jinglei’s handwritten characters after they install the “Fangzheng Jinglei Simplified Chinese” program with their Windows operating system.”

[HK] Jackie Chan to retire in five years

CRIEnglish.com reports that Jackie Chan will be retiring in five years.

According to the article, “Chinese action star Jackie Chan said he is planning to retire from film making in five years. He was speaking during the inauguration of his fourth California fitness sport club in Singapore on Saturday.”

“Chan said he has earned a lot of money but little happiness from working in Hollywood because he couldn’t choose scripts and has to speak standard English.”

[JAPAN] Moviegoers complain of feeling sick after watching a scene in “Babel

The film “BABEL” is currently showing in Japan but a few people have gotten sick after a scene showing flickering lights according to Mainichi Shimbun.

According to the article, “Officials said five women complained of feeling ill one hour and 20 minutes into the film during an opening day screening at Nagoya’s Midland Square Cinema on Saturday. The following day a man at the same theater made a similar complaint. The six reportedly rested on sofas in the lobby before returning home by themselves.”

April 30, 2007Vampires and ninjas and Shockmen, oh my! This week the Wii Shop Channel takes a trip into the world of ghoulish creatures, mystical curses and professorial abductions. See if you can remember which of these games sparked the whip-carrying craze of the late-’80s! For the best retro gaming around, it’s time to pay a visit to the red-hot Wii™ video game system’s Wii Shop Channel.

The three new classic games go live at 9 a.m. Pacific time. Nintendo adds new games to the channel every Monday. Wii owners with a high-speed Internet connection can redeem Wii Points™ to download the games. Wii Points can be purchased in the Wii Shop Channel or at retail outlets. This week’s new games are:

Castlevania® (NES®, 1 player, 500 Wii Points): Step into the shadows of the deadliest dwelling on Earth. Shockman (TurboGrafx16, 1-2 players, 600 Wii Points): It’s been two years since Arnold and Sonya were made into Shockmen. A message from the professor to return to their bodies has them head to his laboratory, but they are ambushed by a mysterious enemy along the way. After narrowly defeating the enemy, they catch a TV news flash announcing the Ryo Empire invasion. They find that the professor has been abducted and set out to rescue him. Shockman is a side-view action shooter that has eight stages, including Action Stages, where you jump and use special techniques, and side-scrolling Shooting Stages. This game expands on the well-paced story from the previous version and contains cooperative elements like shared life and a powerful Team Shockbeam that can be used during two-player simultaneous play.

[HK] Chow Yun Fat joins protesters against the demolition of HK pier

CRIEnglish.com reports that Chow Yun Fat joined protesters against the demolition of a pier in Hong Kong.

According to the article, “One of the protesters, Yip Po-lam told the Post: “We’re overwhelmed by his visit. He is an icon of Hong Kong, we grew up watching his TV dramas.”

“Built in 1957, Queen’s Pier, was closed on Thursday night and will be demolished as part of a redevelopment plan that will see a huge swathe reclaimed from the famous Victoria Harbour to make way for a congestion-relieving bypass.”

[JAPAN] Avril Lavigne does a surprise live performance in Shinjuku

In a surprise event near Shinjuku Station in Tokyo, singer Avril Lavigne (22) who has been promoting her new album “The Best Damn Thing” in Japan, surprised many people when she and her band performed the song “Girlfriend” on Sunday afternoon.  Around 4,000 people were in the area, excited to see the singer who has taken Japan by storm and has been on the Oricon top 5 charts in the last two weeks (and also has had a tribute album featuring Japanese performers singing her English songs).

Although the surprise performance was not public, rumors swelled on the Internet that Avril would be performing a surprise event in Japan.

At the end of the performance, Avril told the crowd “Arigato gozaimasu minna-saikou!  Thank you!” (Thank you every one - Awesome! Thank you!)
On May 2nd, a performance by Avril from Japan will be shown on the KAT-TUN variety show on May 2nd.

[JAPAN] 8,000 people turn out for high school event of live version of Japanese Chess

In Tendo, Yamagata, high school students dressed in samurai outfits for a live version of Japanese chess which brought out 8,000 people to the event according to Mainichi Shimbun.

According to the article, “The event was held on April 21 in Tendo, Yamagata Prefecture, to reproduce a scene that ancient warlord Hideyoshi Toyotomi reportedly carried out. About 8,000 people watched the event.”

[US] LOST actress Kim Yun-jin to appear in “InStyle” Magazine

According to an article on Chosun, Kim Yun-jin will be in a photo shoot for “InStyle” Magazine on Monday.

According to Chosun, “Kim’s agent said, “The days when Kim struggled to get her face known are over. This year’s goal is to increase her popularity in the U.S. and really get her on the star track.” After the shoot is finished in early May, she’ll return to Korea. After a two-year break from Korean acting gigs, Kim will return in the movie “Seven Days.”

[TAIWAN] F4 changes name to JVKV

Taiwan quartet F4, known as playing the main bad boys of “Meteor Garden” (a Taiwan adaption of the Japanese manga/anime series “Hana Yori no Dango”) will be changing their name according to CRIEngish.com.

According to the article, “Angie Chai, the drama’s producer, explains that the use of the name F4 was permitted by the Japanese publisher of “Hana Yori Dango,” or “Boys over Flowers,” the comic book the drama was based on. However, Japan has adapted their own version and now the publisher hopes the name of F4 will no longer be used in unofficial “Hana”-related contexts.”
