DVD REVIEW:

This is one of my favorite all time movies and to see it on DVD makes it much more special in the next viewing and another viewing later on with commentary from Frank Capra, Jr.

The movie deserves every Academy Award it has won and also to be recognized as one of the top 100 movies of all time by the American Film Institute.

The movie’s video and audio has been digitally remastered and the special features was very nice to see.  Especially the “Frank Capra Jr. Remembers” segment, the trailers, vintage advertising and the original live radio broadcast is an even added bonus.  As well as the commentary by Frank Capra’s son.

The only downer but yet interesting is to learn the behavior by our two main thespians behind-the-scenes especially with Claudette Colbert.

Otherwise it’s a great movie classic  that people must see!

DVD REVIEW:

I remember when I first heard that Michael Keaton and Kelly Preston were going to be in a snowman movie and I was like…why?  I was actually expecting this movie to be bad but I was surprised that I enjoyed it a lot!  I really liked how they developed the story between father and son and then son losing father.  A very touching story that your children will definitely enjoy!

First, the pictures don’t do the snowman justice because they really did a good job in the movie making the snow man look good with the use of teaming up with George Lucas Industrial Light and Magic.  Awesome!

The video transfer is beautiful and the audio is pretty good considering it’s a dialogue movie.  As for the DVD, the movie comes with production notes and the theatrical trailer.  I wish there was a long featurette and perhaps deleted scenes or something but it’s ok…  I got more what I expected from this movie.

In a way, I’m kind of happy that Michael Keaton took this role because for a good actor, to make a film for the families/children out there, shows great character.

A great movie for families to watch together with their children.

MOVIE COMPANY: TWENTIETH CENTURY FOX
CAST: Starring Sean Connery, Roger Moore, George Lazenby, Timothy Dalton and Pierce Brosnan
DIRECTED BY: Chris Hunt
PRODUCED BY: Chris Hunt
RATING: Not Rated
TYPE OF MOVIE: Documentary
DURATION: 52 minutes

Bond, James Bond.  Perhaps the greatest fictional cinema icon ever.  He first appeared on the big screen in 1962 in Dr. No, and has remained the most powerful action hero ever since.  The secret to his success is his adaptability.  No matter what tight spot he finds himself, he always appears to be suave, sophisticated and cool.

As a spy Bond is constantly reinventing himself, and on the big screen he has done this five times, as Sean Connery, Roger Moore, George Lazenby, Timothy Dalton and Pierce Brosnan.  The documentary looks at the different characterizations each actors has brought to the role to discover the elements that make up Bond.  It also traces the character back to its origin, the Bond novels by Ian Fleming, whose creation was semi-autobiographical.

From the gadgets to the girls, “The James Bond Story” also features interviews with Q (the late Desmond Llewelyn), Maud Adams, Jane Seymour, Terence Young (Director), Cubby Broccoli (producer), Ian Fleming and more, along with extensive film clips from Dr. No to The World is Not Enough.  This action-packed documentary presents an in-depth look at the quintessential spy who has a license to kill.

DVD REVIEW:

This documentary is actually pretty good.  It was shown on television via AMC.  You learn a lot about the history and the creation of James Bond and the films.

Although I’m not a hardcore fan (as this DVD is for the hardcore fans), I bought this because I have enjoyed many of the films and wanted to check out the other releases on DVD.

I can’t fault this DVD at all since it’s a documentary for television.  It’s letterbox and the audio and video is typical of television DVD’s.

As for special features, there is a 20-question James Bond trivia and filmographies of the actors.

Worth buying if you are a Bond fan or interested in catching up with the Bond stories and to learn about the history of this fictional English superhero icon.

DVD REVIEW:

This movie is a classic and the mother of all sea animals vs. humans.  Sure there has been movies about killer whales, big snakes and other movies with sharks and also other “JAWS” movies but the first movie will always be regarded as the best out there right now.

This 25th Anniversary DVD was one of the most highly anticipated DVD’s out there.  Of course, there was a debate because although the movie won an Academy for best sound, purists cried foul when they heard the movie would be released in DTS and Digital Dolby instead of Mono.  Well, I prefer to watch my DVD’s in the best sound as possible including this movie and thus the DTS version is the way to go.  You literally feel that you are swimming in the beach with the splashes heard all around you.  It’s awesome!  So, the audio is great and the movie looks pretty good despite the fact that it has been 25 years.

Also, this DVD is packed!  You get the documentary of “The Making of Jaws”, deleted scenes, outtakes, storyboards and so much more that this DVD will keep you busy for the weekend.

A highly recommended DVD!

DVD EXTRAS:

DVD REVIEW:

I’m glad that this movie DVD is from Universe Laser.  It’s Letterbox and Digital 5.1 surround.

The movie is another cool romantic story starring the beautiful Kelly Chen.  Although I enjoyed “and I hate you so” more, “lavender” is still an interesting and loveable romantic comedy that you will enjoy.  If anything, the movie makes you wonder if it will be the typical angel movie that you have seen over and over again.

What makes this movie so interesting is you have an angel who is trying to learn the ways of humans and the person he comes to help is Athena, an aroma therapist who lost her love one and is trying to recreate his “scent”.  Next door is Chow Chow, a gay man who was in love with Athena’s deceased boyfriend.  Now comes Angel into the lives of Athena and Chow Chow and things get very interesting because the only way he can survive in Earth is through love.  Athena has no love to give because she’s depressed and still missing her deceased love and Chow Chow shows Angel what love is by taking him to gay bars and telling him to become an erotic dancer and show him how women love it.

It may sound a little corny but if there is one thing that I learned from most Kelly Chen and Kaneshiro Takeshi films is that they are good and I have never really left feeling dissatisfied after watching their movies.

Also important to mention is the music again from the film.  Like “and i hate you so”, the movie is beautiful and enhances the film.  If there was one problem was one scene where the music suddenly cuts off.  I blame that on post-production and editing.

Otherwise, the movie can ended in somewhat of satisfying but leave you feeling with an “is that it?” but fortunately when you think the movie is over, the true ending of the film comes around and you are left feeling satisfied.

The DVD and the colors are very beautiful.  There are some occasional scratches near the end but I wasn’t quite bothered by it.  The audio is great!  Again, the music enhances the film.

As for special features, you get three trailers for films.  Unfortunately, I was expecting a gala premiere, outtakes or deleted scenes but then again, I’m a DVD fanatic and thus picky.

Although not a great romantic film, with the many people in my life interested in aroma therapy and to have three talented actors in this movie makes it an enjoyable romantic comedy.

Judith (Hunter) ending a 20-year relationship with her husband in a restaurant. We see from the beginning that this character is flawed, that she doesn’t really have a life–she eats in, sings to herself in her apartment, goes out alone, etc. Until she meets Pat (DeVito), a man who’s life is in real shambles. He too has been recently divorced plus on top of that his daughter has just died. The circumstances that these two emotionally-disconnected people come together is astounding, which is also why they become such great friends.

KNOWN DVD SECRET(S):  None that I know of

DVD REVIEW:

A very good movie with great performances from Hunter, DeVito and Queen Latifah.  Very good music and a story that shows to a person, no matter what may have happened in the past or how bad your life was then, don’t be depressed.  Do something about it!  That’s what this movie is about for each character.  Doing something about one’s life.

Many feel that this movie is underrated.  That it shouldn’t have been snubbed by the Oscars.  Some feel that each person’s story was great watching but putting it all together as one movie didn’t work well.

The video is very good and the music is excellent.  The special features include deleted scenes which may have benefited the movie.  Also, readings of short stories and more.

My feeling is that the movie is beautifully done and give it a try.

DVD REVIEW:

When I first wrote my review back in 1998 for APR, I liked the movie and was happy because the appearance of Jet Li.  I didn’t like the many uses of anti-Asian slurs but nonetheless the movie itself was good.  I think that’s why I gave it a B.

The video and sound quality demonstrated in this DVD is superb and one thing that will make you love this DVD even more is how Warner Bros. loaded this DVD up with extras.  Trailers for Mel Gibson movies (Warner Bros. related only), Interviews, Extended/deleted scenes from the previous Lethal Weapon series, trailers for all Lethal Weapon movies and so much more.

Just watching these trailers now makes me want to purchase the others on DVD.  What can I say…this DVD should be called a Collector or Special edition because it’s fully loaded!

If you enjoyed the Lethal Weapon series, this DVD is a must get.  Your surround sound will have a good workout and it’s a DVD that you can spend time on because it’s fully loaded.

The Lethal Weapon 4 DVD is a real winner!

DVD REVIEW:

I’m a big fan of the book/audio series and this beautiful story has done a lot in focusing my perspective on life.  When I heard the movie was coming out, I was very happy.  I first bought the making of the film and couldn’t wait until the February showing of the film.

The weird thing though is that the movie will be released on DVD before it is shown on theaters and there is a lot of talk about this. Positive and negative.

The goal is for Christians to buy this DVD and then share it with their non-Christian friends and encouraging them to see the film in February 01.

I’m not sure if this is going to work since most videos that are sent to home video first usually doesn’t have a positive outlook but Cloud Ten is trying something different.

The movie is close to the first book of the multi-book series.  At times in the beginning, the story may seem a little slow and a few people may question when are things going to pick up with the film.  Needless to say that if you remain patient, the story does get better.  I do want to say that this movie could of been a little longer.

My only worry is that since their are many books for the series, for those who are impatient and want a resolution at the end of the movie will probably have to wait, as we are waiting for the latest book to arrive.  I’m not sure if the plan is to release several films or a numerous amount of films like the book.

Anyway, as for the DVD, the DVD comes with the same features that are on the “Making of Left Behind” video tape.  You also get tickets to the movie and a message from the actors.  The disappointing thing is the movie on DVD is not widescreen.  The audio is not digital 5.1.  That’s not good for DVD standard.  The video quality is ok but not brilliant.

Anyway, I hope you go see the movie when released in the theaters and hope you bring a lot of friends to check it out.  If you don’t want to read the books or listen to the CD/tapes, please watch the movie.

DVD REVIEW:

I remember seeing this DVD and wondering which one should I get, “Joan of Arc” which was a television movie or “The Messenger”, a big budget movie.  It was a hard decision but what drew me to purchasing this DVD was the cover.  Sobieski’s look as Joan of Arc looked more convincing and she looked so pure and innocent.  I wondered how this person who projects innocence in the cover will play a military leader?  Well, I don’t know much about Leelee Sobieski and after watching this movie, now I want to watch the movies that she has appeared in because on “Joan of Arc”, you get solid acting.

The long time of this movie made me wonder if it was going to drag but if anything this movie drew me in from start to finish and here is why:

The good acting by the cast members, the great scenery and the selection of Leelee Sobieski as the innocent “Maid of Lorraine”.  She brought something to this movie that drew you in.  Her facial expressions and even the ending still stays in my mind.  Wow!  It’s unexplainable but I love the movie.  It was done very well and I’m impressed that it’s a TV movie.  The movie gets an A+.

What about the DVD?  Well, since this is a TV movie, I didn’t expect too much from the DVD.  The audio was good and the video was good but at times I saw some lines on the screen on parts where there is a lot of action.  The production notes were nice to see but I have to give the DVD a D- for no significant extras.

It appears Sobieski had much to say about the part according to the production notes, why not include a featurette then?  Or even the television commercials or promotional features.  So, yes…the extras rating gets a D-. But you know what, the movie is wonderful and it deserves to be seen and due to it’s size, DVD is the way to go. “Joan of Arc” a definite A+.

Highly recommended!

THE MOVIE:  A+
THE DVD EXTRAS:  D-
THE DVD OVERALL:  Since it’s a TV movie and it’s a large movie, I highly recommend this DVD.  I give it an A but if you include the lack of DVD extra’s and I have to grade it overall this movie drops to a B-/C+.

DVD REVIEW:

Man, I don’t know where to start.  When I first watched “Clerks”, I was like “I don’t get it?  Why do people love this movie?” and then I saw “Dogma” and “Chasing Amy” and I don’t know…I became a big fan of Kevin Smith’s work…I even started to appreciate Ben Affleck more after watching the three movies.

Although, I didn’t watch the movies in order, I saw “MALLRATS” after the three and I love it.  It was very hilarious and the characters were pretty cool!  A few people say…why do you like these movies, I don’t get it?  The same with “Seinfeld”, many people said, I don’t get it?  How do you like a show about nothing.  With Kevin Smith movies, there’s more to the story behind the titles and one of the reason why I respect Smith is his appreciation for having fun, his work and fighting for what he believes what is right despite the corporate execs nagging on him (which you will find out after watching the making of “Mallrats” section).

As for the DVD, “MALLRATS” is awesome!  The colors are nice, the audio…this is a dialogue movie, don’t expect major sounds…  But aside from the cool movie, the special features is what makes this DVD so awesome!  The deleted scenes, damn…this is not 5 minutes worth.  This movie has more deleted scenes than “GEN-X COPS” which has 45 minutes, this DVD has over an hour!  It’s also interesting to find out the certain things they cut out, they pretty much had a different movie beginning than what you see from the original.  Wow!  Then there is this interesting live commentary where you can watch them watch the movie and comment.  You get to use your “angle” button in this section.  Featurettes, a cool inside booklet and much more.  So much stuff to keep you busy for awhile!

Oh, btw…the most interesting part is to know how the execs were against having Jason Mewes in the movie.  Interesting!!

Highly recommended movie…like all Kevin Smith movies!  I LOVE IT! I LOVE IT!  I LOVE IT!
