Advice: Shopping in Tokyo, Japan

I am asked frequently about shopping in Japan. Specifically where to shop in Tokyo.

Everyone has their own favorite areas to shop and depending on your taste, the good news is that each major city within Japan has their own special style when it comes to shopping.

Please bare in mind, shopping in Japan can be very costly.

Many people who visit our pages are interested in Japanese fashion through the magazines (please look at the links on the left) and through Japanese television. From the cool haircuts to the cool clothing and accessories, many hope to go to Tokyo and find these accessories, clothing or just to be around the culture.

There are so many cool places to shop in Japan, I guess if anything, take your time to see the shops and see what shopping areas in Tokyo that you prefer. Shinjuku (photo above) is where a lot of the big fashion mall-like areas exist. Some say that this section is more for the mature and rich but it's a great place to visit for the spectacular view over Japan, to watch movies (yes, nod your head when asked if you are a student), the book shopping (Kinokuniya HQ is here) and of course the mall-like buildings.

There is Shibuya (photo: Right), a trendy, popular and very crowded area that many young people and people into contemporary J trends go for their fashion and music needs. For fans of Japanese entertainment, especially JPOP culture - You will love Shibuya!

In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if many of you JPOP fanatics spend all your money in this city.

It's pretty cool but the inconvenience is how crowded the city gets at night. It's a lively city that stays awake

very late but when you ride that train back home, it's nearly cheek to cheek with other people (yes, that crowded) and not so great for the clausterphobics.

Harajuku is another section with many shops that you can find people of various styles throughout the shopping district for the young and old.

Again, this is another place for the J-ENT/JPOP fans to visit because of how the area caters to Japanese entertainment and trends. What makes Harajuku so different from the other cities is the fact that it's not all about big buildings. It's like a big alley with shops on the side. It's pretty cool and recommend checking the area out.

The Fuji TV building and Tokyo Bay in Odaiba

Then there is Odaiba which is growing. You can find many shops for general shopping in this area. Also, when visiting these areas, you will find a plethora of stores and shopping sections in the train stations, so try not to spend all your money in one place. Odaiba is where a lot of movies and dramas (and television shows) are shot. It's also where the cool and large Sega Joypolis indoor amusement center is located.

Since these city areas are not too far from each other by train, you can visit them all again later. So that's probably the best advice is not to spend your money all in one place until you visit each section.
