DVD REVIEW:
I
remember as a kid watching "Flash Gordon", a movie in
the 80's and I just thought it was the greatest movie at the time
next to Star Wars. Decades later, I bought the DVD and was surprised
to find the special effects and everything so lame (compared to
today's standards).
Well,
"Zu Warriors from Magic Mountain" is a milestone in
Hong Kong Cinema because it was the first "fantasy Kung-Fu"
movie of it's time. This movie help jumpstart movies such as "Heroic
Trio", "Bride with White Hair" and many more. The
movie at the time featured interesting wire work and special effects.
But
watching it today makes you realize how simple special effects
that you would now normally see on a Power Rangers episode captured
the attention of many back then. The monsters were very Power
Ranger-esque, the special effects were well...basic. Of course,
the huge ice cubes which you could tell were plastic was quite
humorous but again this was probably cutting edge stuff then.
But I would have to say that the movie sets were very nice. With
all the statues almost Raider of the Lost Ark-like.
Anyway,
the movie went from humorous->to boring->to interesting
and ended with ->that's it?
That's
how I found this movie. And you will read from many reviews out
there, people loved this movie because afterall this movie was
a movie milestone for HK Cinema. It was the HK "Star Wars".
Unfortunately,
I can't share the same enthusiasm. If anything, for an older movie,
I do enjoy that Universe released this with removable English
subs. As for special features, there is a trailer and a trailer
for a serious Jackie Chan/Sammo Hung movie titled "Heart
of the Dragon".
Otherwise
if you want to watch a movie that jumpstarted the fantasy martial
arts movie genre, this is the movie to watch. But if you don't
really care about that, you may want to pass.
