DVD REVIEW:
Andy Lau plays a
character of a Mahjong king. He doesn't need a big paying
job, he can make all the money in the world by playing
mahjong. Gigi Leung plays Andy's girlfriend who has a
problem dealing with her emotions when she gets upset and wants to
marry the Mahjong King. Louis Koo plays Andy's younger
brother who takes care of their mother who has Alzheimer's disease
and tries to find a good paying job to support the family.
Lau Ching-Wai plays the bad guy who wants nothing more but to be
Mahjong king even if he has to swindle others to make it.
A movie about mahjong
may appear to sound boring but "Fat Choi Spirit" is
actually a pretty funny movie. For one, you don't have
to understand mahjong to enjoy this movie and two, the characters
are just so funny.
Supplying the comic
relief in this film is Gigi Leung, who does what she can to have
her boyfriend like her more. She takes professional jobs as
a female cop, tax agent, airline stewardess and even does
something else to get Andy's (as well as other men's) attention.
One scene finds her cleaning his messy apartment but where she
puts the mess is very humorous. Also, supplying the
comic relief is the mother of the Mahjong King. Some may see
it as a knock on Alzheimer's but the interaction between mother
and sons and mother and son's girlfriend is very funny. The
other is the "evil" gang. No, they didn't go for
triad young guys, they went for very old men to play the
rambunctious gang.
Lau Ching-Wai plays a
very good, humorous opponent and plays the part well. As
does Andy for the Mahjong King. As for Louis Koo, he either
did it because his friends are in it or to boost box office
receipts because his character is quite minor in this film.
As for the DVD, there
is not much to offered on it but the movie and for that I gave
this DVD a lower rating because of it. But if special
features don't matter, definitely check out "Fat Choi
Spirit" if you are in need of a dose of HK humor.
