DVD REVIEW:

Once you start the DVD, you are given a very nice menu with beatiful music. I asked myself, can this be a cool romance movie?

Upon watching "Failan", I realized the movie is anything but.

The movie starts off with Failan going into Korea and then for almost 45 minutes the story focuses on Lee Kang Jae.

The movie focuses on Lee Kang Jae. A gangster who is known to be a ganster but doesn't have the heart to really do anything horrible to people he cares about. One night his gangster boss spot an opposing person at his nightclub and savagely beats him. To his regret, the man lives and the boss wants Lee Kang Jae to take the blame to save face and not go to prison.

Lee Kang Jae will take the rap for his boss and spend ten years in prison for the promise of money until he finds out that his wife has died.

The story then goes into Lee Kang Jae trying to know the woman he married but never met. Also, the story shows how Failan dreamed of one day meeting her husband that she had arranged herself to get married and worked hard in Korea but suddenly takes ill.

By seeing what kind of woman she is, Lee Kang Jae has second thoughts of his life and decides not to take the wrap for his boss. From there on, you pretty much expect what will happen next.

The movie is presented on DVD ala wide screen and there are no special features but the character information. Note: With some China Star Entertainment DVD's - on some players, the screen will be stretched out to be pan and scan but the DVD is in fact widescreen.

When I wrote the original review, I think I may have been a little to hard on it but on a second watch, I just realize how powerful the acting was from Sik Choi and Cecilia Cheung. The choices of scenery, the emotions and the powerful performance of both actors was amazing.

Again, for those who enjoy happy endings may not like this movie but after a second viewing, I now appreciate this film as two people who don't have much going with their lives. Failan as a woman who works hard and loves the man that gave her the opportunity to live in Korea and appreciates him for his good heart. Kung Jae, a man who lives a life of crime but has a good heart but no one appreciates him and in his life he came to learn that the wife he never met was indeed what he needed in his life and now it's too late.
