DVD REVIEW:
Alice Tsui (Yeung) is
a writer for a women's magazine called "Lady" which
is being merged with the male magazine "Gent" to form
one magazine titled "Boku". From the male magazine comes
Ryan, the news editor who has an eye for his beautiful boss but
has a problem with fainting quite easily.
Alice comes from an
unsual background with a father who trained her in Kung Fu and
family medicine and an interesting looking mother... Like most
HK movies, during the merge of the magazine, Alice and Ryan don't
get along but as the movie goes on, you get to see them getting
along and Alice starting to fall for him but unfortunately, he
has his eyes on another woman.
Where "Dry Wood
Fierce Fire" shines is during the friendship of Alice and
Ryan and similar to "La Brassiere", I believe the two
are improvising in certain scenes.
I never really cared
for Miriam Yeung on "Feel 100% II" but it appears that
she is becoming HK's latest "hot" actress and with several
movies under her belt, I finally have taken notice of her. She
seems to be a person full of spirit and Louis Koo is Louis Koo
and for these kind of roles, he plays the role well.
I have to admit that
I was enjoying this movie as I looked at it as a fun rollercoasters
ride which starts out a little slow in the beginning, gets better
and better but unlike a roller coaster ride, "Dry Wood Fierce
Fire" ends with one of the lamest writing I have ever seen
in a romantic comedy.
I was very disappointed
in the direction of where the movie went in the last 5-10 minutes.
Make an "L" hand gesture on your forehead because the
ending gets a capital L for "lame" and if you can make
an S with both hands, I'll use the word "stupid".
As for the DVD, it's
the first Wide Sight Entertainment DVD that I watched and it's
bare to the bones with the exception of a deleted cut scene. The
movie is full dialogue and there are good songs from Miriam that
play in the background.
But going back to the
movie, it's great to have a balance of romance and comedy but
when you throw in bad comedy and writing at the end, unfortunately
it just really crippled the true enjoyment of this movie.
