DVD REVIEW:
I have read that if
"Shaolin Soccer" was the best movie of 2001, "Chinese
Odyssey 2002" should be the #2 movie and whatever review
that you find on this film, it is agreed by many that this movie
is very good.
This movie is a comedy
and Jeffry Lau is back with another version of "Chinese Odyssey"
which parodies itself with current situations in 2002 with the
past. No, it's not like the modern version of "Romeo and
Juliet" or "Moulin Rouge" but one scene has the
emperor trying out different designs which include a big afro,
another scene has a gag on the street cameras that take pictures
of people speeding, in this case Tony Leung speeding on his horse.
The humor is more spotlighted on how Tony believes Faye's character
is a man and Faye trying to carry out her disguise despite the
fact that she is falling for Tony's character. This is where you
see both actor's performance shine.
There are many gags
throughout this movie but what makes this film shine is a combination
of the setting, the characters, the costume design and the performance
from the actors and actresses. Faye Wong and Chang Chen do a great
job in their performance of the royal family. It's been awhile
since we seen Faye Wong demonstrate her acting skills since "Chung
King Express" and "Okinawa Rendezvous" was not
exactly all that great. This time around Faye demonstrates her
humor along with a touching emotional scene in the movie and she
plays the part of the princess very well.
As for the brother and
sister, Tony Leung is already a noteable actor and he does a great
job playing the brother. Playin gthe sister is "Shaolin Soccer"
actress Vicky Zhao who has a chance to use a variety of emotions
in this film.
Also, adding to the
enjoyment are the side characters and cameos from "Chinese
Odyssey" actress Athena Chu (it's nice to see her again!)
and Eric Kot.
As for the DVD, the
DVD sounds great (the music is awesome!). The DVD also looks great
and this is supposed to be the beginning of Mei Ah's attempt to
making a better quality DVD with better menus and more features.
They succeeded in designing a better menu system but there could
of been more special features for a film at this calibre. The
character database is still the same but designed much better.
The opera segment is clips from the movie with a brief explanation
of Huangmei Opera. But I will
give credit to Mei Ah because they are striving to be better.
As for the film, if
you enjoyed the humor of "Shaolin Soccer", more than
likely you will enjoy the humor of this film. "Chinese Odyssey
2002" is highly recommended.
