REVIEW: Revolutionary
Girl Utena: The Movie is a condensed version of the television series but taking
the characters of the popular series to another alternative universe/perspective.
I must say that I enjoyed
the visuals and the anime looks great! But the storyline featuring a lesbian
Utena and Anthy and abusive men, perhaps this may have been Ikuhara's original
vision of how Utena should be? Maybe? Maybe not? I
suppose the reason why I enjoyed the Utena TV series because it was different,
it was funny and you wanted to see Utena kick some ass. But I noticed a
few reviews use David Lynch's name and if you are indeed fans of Lynch's work
especially trippy shows like "Twin Peaks", you may like this movie.
If Ikuhara is trying to go for that type of style, this movie has accomplished
that feat. I must say that
this movie is not aimed for the young television crowd either, so don't go and
show your young kids this movie. It's
quite trippy and it's not for everyone. I have to admit that I'm quite biased
towards the television series that seeing an alternate universe bugged me a little
but take it as it is as an alternative universe of the Utena series and Ikuhara's
experimentation movie, you'll find this movie quite interesting. As
for the DVD, you are given a director's commentary, behind-the-scenes video, galleries
and more. A way an anime DVD should be made since many skimp on special
features. As for the video quality, it's beautiful and the Utena series
has always been known for it's cool music. So, does the movie. All
in all, one of the better packaged anime DVD's out there but I hope they complete
the DVD television series stateside! Again, if you are a fan of the series
and expect the same thing as the TV series...don't. THE
