[Part 7] [Daily Yomiuri, October 13,2004]: Kimpachi returns to Sakura Middle School Yomiuri Shimbun The seventh season of San-nen B-gumi Kimpachi-sensei starts Friday at 10 p.m. on the TBS network. The popular school drama features a passionate middle school teacher, Kimpachi Sakamoto, played by Tetsuya Takeda, who solves various problems that befall him and his students. The first season of the drama, which aired in 1979, featured scripts by playwright Mieko Osanai that vividly depicted contemporary educational problems. The highest rating of the season was 39.9 percent, and the average rating was 24.4 percent. The average rating of the second season, which aired the following year, grew to 26.3 percent, and the show achieved a popularity that made it a social phenomenon. The series has produced a number of popular actors and personalities. They include Toshihiko Tahara and Junko Mihara, who appeared in the first season, and Aya Ueto, who was in the sixth season. Each season has different themes to reflect changes in schools and the educational system. The new season sees Kimpachi return to Sakura Middle School in Tokyo three years after the last season, when he was transferred to a board of education after he clashed with the school principal over their respective educational philosophies. The role of Kimpachi means a lot to Takeda. "This drama is my life's work. Every season, I get to meet different boys and girls who play my students," Takeda said. "I never get bored playing the teacher, because it's interesting to communicate with the young actors. They reflect the society of the time." While Kimpachi is sometimes strict with his students, he is also kind to those who have been hurt. "Kimpachi is a teacher who has both paternal and maternal instincts," said Takeda, who added that he is like this himself when it comes to shooting the show. "If some of the young actors are not very good in their roles, I give them a thorough drilling in acting. Fatherly love is vanishing from society, but I believe in its importance," he said. This close relationship between Takeda and the young actors may explain the palpable tension between the characters on the set. The new season takes up the theme of drug addiction among students. "Students today are dealing with problems we couldn't have imagined when the show began. It really hits home how much has changed since then," Takeda said. Among the drama's highlights are Kimpachi's long speeches, which he makes to his students. "Before filming starts, I usually repeat the speech several times to deeply understand the words and to be able to convey them naturally and in my own way, so that my students and viewers can get something from them," Takeda said. Filming for the season, which will continue for six months, has just started. "When I put on Kimpachi's gray jacket, I immediately get into character," said with a laugh.
