Ningen no Shoumei (Human Proof)

Two dramas that enjoyed considerable preseason publicity are proving a challenge to like. Ningen no Shomei (Thursdays, 10 p.m. on the Fuji network) is a dark, rather violent tale of detectives investigating the death of an American in Tokyo. Yutaka Takenouchi is convincing as a tough detective, who suffers flashbacks from a youthful trauma, but not especially likable.
Keiko Matsuzaka plays a politician who also seems to be hiding a childhood trauma. Meanwhile, there is a kidnapped woman with a wheelchair-using husband who believes she is cheating on him. Figuring out how they all fit together is just a bit too much for a sultry summer evening.
