Last Present (2004)

[Excerpt From Daily Yomiuri, Televiews, July 15, 2004, Wm. Penn.]: In an attempt to attract drama fans back to their sofas, the networks have gone for gravitas this quarter, with lots of series focused on illness, tragedy and adversity. One of the most interesting is Last Present (Wednesdays, 10 p.m. on the NTV network), which got little preseason publicity hype. Yuki Amami stars as Asuka, a stoic career woman who has just been told she has three months to live. Asuka has a 9-year-old daughter,
Ayumi, with whom she has never been able to bond. Unable to deal with an
incessantly screaming baby, she fled the child and her marriage years ago
and has had little to do with them since. Her ex-husband, who plans to
remarry soon, has custody.

Can Asuka resolve the parent-child relationship before she dies? Dealing
with issues that seldom get airtime, this one just might resonate with
viewers. Three stars.
